All of these characters show that while Deku is pretty neat, anime MCs can still do more.

Ichigo's punk attitude was a defense mechanism, which he gradually scaled back to reveal his true self once more.
Ichigo also surprised anime fans with his fantastic growth as Soul Reaper, and he didn't even need a school like UA to pull it off. Ichigo's constant need for training may be a reflection of Deku's own, but the similarities end there. Ichigo beats Deku in this arena because mastering his powers means facing his inner hollow and asking himself some hard questions about why he fights. The shocking truth of Ichigo's Quincy heritage also helped flesh out Masaki's character, explaining the origin of the first Zangetsu soul.

Both are amazing shonen leads that inspire fans to go plus ultra or face the horizon with gusto, but Luffy does it better. Like Deku, Luffy gained superhuman strength one day, then trained hard to maximize it and save the day. The difference is that Luffy is largely self-taught and has overcome even greater obstacles than Deku.
Luffy invented his Gears, a great example of his hands-on ingenuity in the game, and now he's inspiring everyone through Gear 5 as Nika's avatar. Luffy and his crew are so awesome that they and their Jolly Roger have become symbols of real-life protest against oppression and inequality. As much as Deku wants to be a symbol of peace, he has not achieved such a surprising feat.

Aqua Hoshino from is not unlike Of Oshi noThorfinn Karlsefni from the historical anime series The Vinland Saga Cooler than Deku because his arc is so painfully personal. Deku may have dealt with self-doubt and loss before, but such hard-hitting themes are core to Thorfinn's character, not just an element of it. It was devastating to see a grieving, angry Thorfinn miss his chance for revenge, only to end up a slave on a farm without hope.

Naruto Uzumaki is an amazing MC, but these characters could be considered even better.
Or rather, there's no hope that Thorfinn can see at first, because it just wasn't finished. Incredibly, Thorfinn found a way to overcome his inner demons and finally absorb Askeladd's lessons about the meaning of life, and that it meant everything. This made Thorfinn more inspiring than Deku The Vinland SagaStrong writing, and it's all the more grounded and realistic too.

Some anime heroes focus a little less on power scaling and more on the individual aspect of strength and combat. Deku was the opposite, emphasizing quirk power and training while the personal aspect was a bonus. in Fullmetal Alchemist: BrotherhoodIt is completely personal to Edward Elric. He and his brother Alphonse lost much of their hubbub, noting the time when they were able to cheat the laws of nature by reviving their mother. That plot twist alone made Edward one of the best MCs in anime.
From there, Edward feels a little formulaic but also refreshingly inventive as a shonen hero. He's more about science, alchemy, martial arts, and clever tricks than something like Kamehameha or Detroit Smash, and it always looks good. Edward is also charmingly flawed as a free-spirited, hot-headed wanderer who will save Amestris on his own terms.

Denji is a wonderfully deconstructive shonen lead with a small dream
Denji's constant suffering feels more realistic than Deku's own struggle
Like Edward Elric and Thorfinn, Denji proves how a strong personal angle means more than reckless power scaling to make an anime MC worthwhile. The Chainsaw Man Time moves on with stronger assassins and devils, and Denji keeps fighting hard to defeat them, but that's not the point. The heart of Denji's character is how he will always be a lost, vulnerable young man who cannot fill that void in his heart.
Denzie is sympathetic and realistic as a sad teenager who wants basic amenities like shelter, food and love to feel like his life is worth living. It's more modest than anything Deku has done My Hero AcademiaAnd that actually works in Denji's favor. It also reinforces the new novelty of Denji's subversive character, fighting him so desperately for so little. Any anime fan who feels down on their luck or lost in life will relate more to Denji than Deku.
