7 characters who fought Tanjiro and should have won

The following article contains major spoilers for the final arc of the series.

The fact that Tanjiro Kamado is escaping seemingly impossible difficulties at every minute is all part of the fun. Demon SlayerYet the series would have ended the credits long ago, if it had followed its own logic. Although the hero is a good-hearted person and a rock-head, the difference in power between a rookie assassin and a hundred-year-old monster is usually too wide to close by being good alone. Many fans have commented that a world as evil as this requires Tanjiro to have a guardian angel (or a more compassionate mangaka) constantly looking over his shoulder.

These entries discuss villains who nearly triumphed before some plot twist changed the plan, or a last-minute save changed the series. These characters not only push the hero to his limits; They completely destroyed them, starting with the dangers encountered in the early stages of the anime, and ending with the final boss. Here are seven examples where, for viewers who like a good what-if scenario, the bad guys really should win.

The Demon Slayer anime has many powerful demons. These characters are the most dangerous.

Yahaba

Yahaba Demon Slayer

The fight against Tamayo in his house was a literal headache for the fandom as it forced Tanjiro to fight invisible forces of physics. The arrows used by Yahaba as a vector gave him the ability to throw the hero as a ragdoll without being close enough to hit with the sword, and that is a nightmare for any close range fighters. Since the hero was already dealing with several broken ribs, every landing was a potential game-ender, and while the monster could move in the direction the ball was found, the use of the legs was practically useless.

According to the scriptures, the main hero of the story himself managed to avoid this mess only by resorting to some desperate means to cushion the arrogance of Yahaba and the force of such violent arrows. Instead of trying to get a little creative with the manipulation of vectors, the demon can twist the hero into a pretzel and make him realize too late how to counter the Blood Demon Art. It was this near-death experience that demonstrated to the community how dangerous monsters can be when they stop engaging in fair combat and start interfering with the environment.

Enmu

The Mugen Train arc is a favorite among fans, but it also holds one of the series' scariest close-up moments. Enmu is able to place Tanjiro in a dream reality where the only way out is by killing himself, creating a deadly psychic cycle. The dreams were so fast that Tanjiro couldn't even make out what was reality. In real life, he almost stabbed his own throat with his sword. If he had hit, the story would have closed with a self-inflicted death blow before the train reached its destination.

That's when the fandom credits everyone with the fact that Inosuke physically deflected Tanjiro's blade. Inosuke's pig mask and wild instincts allow him to see through Enmu's movements. He came in, yelling at Tanjiro to come to his senses, the sword blade about to plunge into his throat. Tanjiro would have been a sitting duck without Inosuke and Nezuko's help with his Blood Burst to remove the demon's effects. Inmu had won the battle of the mind; Tanjiro was still alive because he had a team to see his blind spots.

Hantengu

The battle with the Upper Moon Char was a very difficult test of patience, one that Tanjiro could not possibly have succeeded on his own. The Zohakiten clone was a giant multi-headed dragon that dominated the battlefield with sonic screams and wood manipulation. Tanjiro was so disoriented by the sheer scale of the attack that he was pinned down and crushed several times. The manga depicts his stamina as almost nil, as he can only keep going because his fear of the upper moon keeps him moving.

Can people say again that I can't be human? I was scared, so I stopped my power. But not now! – Mitsuri Kanroji

The fandom knows that Mitsuri Kanroji, Prem Hashira, is the real hero of this struggle. She was in the right place at the right time to deal a massive blow that would have killed Tanjiro instantly. After Mitsuri got the main body, Tanjiro was having a hard time finding the real Hantengu, a rat-shaped beast hiding in the grass. The time of day barrier was according to the rising sun lore; If they had been in Infinity Castle or the Gloomy Cave, Hantengu would have finally hidden Tanjiro.

Mount Natagumo Arc is considered as a point when powerscaling Demon Slayer became a reality. Even after Tanjiro unlocks “Hinokami Kagura” in an amazing display of fire and determination, the manga reveals the brutal truth: it didn't work. Rui used his cutting thread cage to cut off Tanjiro's head before he could attack, and thus the monster still existed and was in control. The massive energy drain from the fire dance left Tanjiro unable to move as he fell face down in the dirt.

This is the most popular clutch moment of the series: if Giyu Tomioka hadn't shown up in Eleventh Form: Dead Calm, Rui could have killed Tanjiro in seconds. It has been argued among fans that technically, Rui won that exchange, as he overcame Tanjiro's greatest moves and had most of the Blood Demon Art left. For Tanjiro, this is a big wake-up call.

Daki and Guitaro

gyutaro-daki-demon-slayer

The fight in the entertainment district was a bloody battle that Tanjiro felt left him broken. The flying blood sickle wielded by Gyutaro was covered in poisonous blood that killed a normal person in minutes and Tanjiro suffered more than one injury during the fight. Fans recall how helpless Tanjiro felt during the fight. If it wasn't for the support of Tenzen and Inosuke and Genitsu, Tanjiro would never have defeated the top tier at this point. Gyutaro was an experienced assassin, having killed fifteen Hasira, and there was no way he could lose to a team of rookies.

The only reason Tanjiro is still around is because Nezuko's “Blood Burst” removed the poison and Tenzen Uzui's “Musical Score” technique bought enough time for the final opening. Tanjiro was practically a corpse even after the victory; Without Nezuko igniting his blood, he died right there. If we're based purely on the knowledge of Upper Moon's lethality, Gyutaro would have confirmed the murder, and only a series of “miracles” save Tanjiro's heart.

Akaja

Featured 'Ufotable is Three': Demon Slayer Infinity Castle May Be the Best Anime of 2025 Tanjiro Akaja

Tanjiro had recently beaten Akaza with his headbutting strike due to his selfless state, which allowed him to avoid Akaza's “compass needle”, but legend shows that Akaza was the better fighter. Akaja, having lost his head, does not want to die, and in a terrifying turn, he grows it back through sheer force while Tanjiro is helpless and unconscious. By this time, the struggle was over. In one attack, Tanjiro breathed his last, but it wasn't enough to stop the massacre of the Upper Moon Three.

The community realizes that Tanjiro never defeated Akaza; Akaja defeated himself. When Akaza discovered Hakuji and Koyuki's memories, he killed himself with his own technique. It would have taken five more minutes for the demon to remain as a demon and Tanjiro and Giyu would not have existed. This is also one of the few shonen examples in which the antagonist was much stronger than the protagonist and the situation had to be resolved based on moral experience rather than physical victory.

Muzan Kibutsuji

Demon Slayer Kibutsuji Muzan-1

The final battle with the Demon King turned into a desperate survival game, which Tanjiro actually lost on several occasions. Muzan was so fast and strong that he blasted all the assassins on the ground with poisonous blood that instantly rotted their cells. Tanjiro was so badly hurt that half his face was swollen into a large tumor, and at one point in the battle he was technically dead. It only took Tamayo a high-dose medical cocktail to get him back on his feet.

Demon Slayer : Saddest death in the series, ranked

As the story of the Demon Slayer continues, many more characters meet tragic ends. But which death hurt the most by the end of this story?

Lore-correct accounts show that Muzan was 9,000 years old fighting four poisons in one night, but still he almost won. Well, technically, he did. If the Demon Slayer Corps hadn't been there to protect him and take the hit from Sun, Tanjiro would have died in vain along with everyone else. It demanded all that survived, a massive potion dose, and the spirits of the dead Hasira unable to pull Muzan into the light. In Tanjiro's case, it wasn't a conflict he won but a disaster he managed to survive because other people were willing to die on his behalf.
