As a codifier for modern shonen anime and manga, this goes without saying Dragon Ball There is a fair share of plot armor, contrivances, conveniences and coincidences to justify the Z-fighters winning against seemingly impossible odds. Although Akira Toriyama is good at power-scaling (especially as far as Dragon Ball As far as the manga is concerned), Goku's villains have a nasty habit of ruining what should be easy wins.
Dragon Ball: 7 Strong Villain Techniques
Dragon Ball villains are hard to beat, and these super powerful techniques don't make things easy.
throughout the original Dragon Ball, DBZ, Dragon Ball GTand Dragon Ball SuperGoku fights, survives, and even wins against characters who should obviously overpower and beat him. Most of the time, this is done to make the story more interesting and resolve a story theme or character arc, but it doesn't stop there. Dragon Ball To draw these pits demands a certain suspension of disbelief.
1
King Piccolo literally stops Goku's heart in the original Dragon Ball
Akira Toryama was notoriously ill while writing and illustrating the Demon King Piccolo saga. Dragon Ball Manga. It's a testament to his skill as a writer and performer that the story arc is regularly heralded as a moment. Dragon Ball Really surprising, but for keen readers, it's clear that Toryama wasn't firing on all cylinders. Case in point? King Piccolo literally kills Goku at the beginning of the arc. During their first battle, Piccolo stops Goku's heart, checks to make sure he's dead, and then leaves with the Dragon Ball after it's confirmed that Goku did.
Then Goku's heart stops beating out of nowhere in the next chapter. Never before and never again Dragon Ball So shamelessly defeats its main character only to bring it back from a clear defeat. Dragon Ball Super In the Granola Saga, Bardock tries to make things right by keeping his sons safe and alive, but the fact is that King Piccolo did Goku would have conquered the entire world if his heart hadn't miraculously restarted.
2
Vegeta would have beaten Goku if he hadn't turned into a giant ape
Outside of Goku using Kaiokane x 4, Vegeta's power level was higher than Goku's during the Saiyan Saga, and greatly increased once he transformed into a great ape. Here's the thing, though: Vegeta didn't need to turn into a giant ape. By creating and transforming an artificial moon, Vegeta harvested a large amount of his Ki. When Yajirobe cuts off his tail, Vegeta is weakened enough where Gohan and Krillin are able to subdue him with Goku's support.
Dragon Ball: 7 Strong Saiyan Techniques
Saiyans don't mess around in battle. These techniques can outlast almost anyone.
If Vegeta hadn't changed, he would have actually been able to beat Goku fair and square. Goku used up almost all of his energy during their beam battle, having enough Ki to use a few more bursts of Kaiokane, fire a Ki Blast, and charge a much weaker Spirit Bomb. By keeping his cool, Vegeta can easily kill Goku. Worse, Gohan and Krillin would never return to help, as they would only turn up once Vegeta created his fake moon.
3
Frieza only loses because Goku turns Super Saiyan
Ma a Dragon Ball Without the Super Saiyan forms, Goku would have lost to Frieza and died on Namek. Even with Kaioken x 20, Goku is strong enough to fight Frieza who is only using half of his full power. The reveal of Frieza toying with Goku makes it clear how completely outmatched the Z-Fighters are. Even a spirit bomb isn't enough to kill Frieza. Like Vegeta before him, Frieza makes a huge mistake that costs him the rest of the fight.
If Frieza had gone after Goku immediately instead of killing Krillin, injuring Piccolo, and threatening Gohan, he would have actually won. Goku was defenseless and defenseless after his Spirit Bomb. Frieza had the best chance to win, but wasted it on emotionally torturing Goku. According to the story, it was clearly a good move for Dragon Ball Z Goku turning Super Saiyan is his character arc and one of the most satisfying moments of the series.

Legendary Super Saiyan Broly originally won his battle with Goku
Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan One of the most disappointing films in the franchise. Filled with amazing animation, great music, and extraordinary fight choreography DBZ The movie 8 Peters has a shockingly lame ending. After spending the entire movie trying to subdue Broly and failing, Goku's brilliant plan to defeat the legendary Super Saiyan is to…punch him really hard. Yes, Gohan, Piccolo, Vegeta, and Future Trunks all donate their Ki so Goku has more power, but it just feels unearned.
Dragon Ball officially reveals the top 21 most popular characters in the franchise
As Dragon Ball The One moves into its final round, only 21 out of 212 remain.
By all metrics, Broly won the war. He grew stronger throughout the fight and was powerful enough to fight multiple Super Saiyans and a Super Nemesis at once. The only reason Broly lost is because a Dragon Ball Z The film obviously cannot end with the death of all the main characters to the villain. More than Goku's miracle punch, it's the bad writing that ultimately defeats Broly.

Super Buu should have killed Goku in seconds (anime only)
in Dragon Ball In the manga, Goku refuses to fight Super Buu. It is clear that Super Saiyan 3 Goku is only slightly stronger than Fat Buu and is on the same level as Kid Buu. Super Buu is too powerful for Goku to handle even at his strongest. To pad for time and back Goku up to the strongest character in the series, the Dragon Ball Z The anime actually has SSJ3 Goku briefly fighting Buutenks while Ultimate Gohan searches for the Potara Earring.
Goku doesn't land any big, compensating hits, but he successfully dodges many of Boutenks' blows, hitting the tank and stalling for Gohan. This filler fight completely destroys the power-scaling of the Buu Saga. Buutenks was strong enough to make short work of Ultimate Gohan like he was nothing. Buutenks is strong and fast enough to kill Super Saiyan 3 Goku in a single hit. There's a reason Akira Toriyama never got to fight Super Buu with Goku in the manga.

Omega Shenron may have actually killed Goku at the end of Dragon Ball GT
Dragon Ball GTIts ending is as beautiful as it is confusing. After Omega defeats Shenron, Goku flies at Shenron with the Dragon Balls, seemingly ascending to a new plane of existence. What happened to Goku remains a matter of debate Dragon Ball Fans have seen Goku killed on-screen for years, especially by Omega Shenron Dragon Ball GT Episode 63 with her negative energy force.
When Goku returns for the final battle, he has a new aura and nothing can hurt him. Once the battle is over, Goku mysteriously leaves Earth and returns only as a cameo in the final scene of the series. While Dragon Ball GTWhile the writers deliberately left Goku's fate ambiguous, it is clear that Omega Shenron managed to kill Goku for real, just for the sake of it. something Bringing Goku back—and not even alive—needs.

Jiren was the strongest fighter in the Tournament of Power
In terms of raw power, Jiren was the strongest fighter in the Tournament of Power. Even Ultra Instinct wasn't enough for Goku to ring out and defeat Jiren. in both Dragon Ball Super In the anime and manga, Goku and Frieza are forced to team up to take down Jiren, with Universe 7 only winning because Android 17 hid himself on stage after looking doomed. Jiren loses not because he is weak, but because he is Goku's ally.
It's a good story beat and theme for the end of the universe survival saga, but it doesn't change the fact that Jiren could have easily defeated Goku, Frieza, and Android 17 at several different points. Realistically, Jiren should have been able to beat Goku before even using Ultra Instinct. The Dragon Ball Super The anime alone gives Jiren plenty of opportunities to end things.
