The Final Fantasy 13 trilogy is undoubtedly the most polarizing entry in the story history of Final Fantasy. The series has easily the lowest Metacritic user score, sitting at 6.3, and is often the subject of low ratings on critically curated lists. Trilogy lovers, though, will really like this one.
Final Fantasy 2 is the second lowest-rated game, with a Metacritic user score of 6.5, and the original Final Fantasy is the third-lowest, with a score of 6.9.
Despite its mixed reception, the title remains one of the hardest games to play on modern consoles. It is, and always has been, available on PC, and it can be played on Xbox through its backwards compatibility services. However, it has not been available on PlayStation since PS3, and it has never been playable on Nintendo consoles.
While mild rumors about a remaster have been circulating for a while now, Final Fantasy 13 fans think we have the best sign yet that a re-release is coming, and they think it could be announced soon, with one of the game's artists set to host the upcoming PlayStation State of Play.
The Final Fantasy 13 actor is MCing the upcoming PlayStation State of Play Japan
There have often been a few rumblings about a Final Fantasy 13 remaster, naturally to mixed reception, but Square Enix decided to kick things into overdrive last year. Responding to composer Alex Mokala who suggested “Final Fantasy XIII needs a remaster”, the developers said, “Is there a reason for a remaster instead of a remake?” An innocent question, but one that got the wheels turning.
Yesterday, PlayStation announced a new State of Play, “curated for Japan and Asian players”, with the event MCed by actor Yuki Kaji. Kaji has played dozens of roles in TV, anime, and video games, including Eren Yeager in Attack on Titan, Shoto Todoroki in My Hero Academia, and Link in the original Hyrule Warriors game, but one role turned heads (thanks, Genki). Kazi played Hope in Final Fantasy 13, and there it is hope His appearance at this showcase will herald the announcement of a possible Final Fantasy 13 remaster.
“I'm being blue-balled here believing FF13 is getting the spotlight? Because it's working,” Honkaimen said on Twitter. “Don't give me hope that we'll finally get a FF13 collection,” Stu added. Discussions continued elsewhere.
Given PlayStation's proximity to the Final Fantasy franchise, with Remake, Rebirth, and 16 all launching as exclusives, and the fact that this showcase is geared toward Japanese gamers, this seems as good a time as any to announce a remaster. However, it's worth keeping your expectations in check, as it could be the case that the company gets to host its showcase with a big artist in the aforementioned area.
