Fallout 4: Annual Edition was always fighting a losing battle against public perception because the update broke everyone's mods — something that's always controversial in such a heavily-modded title.
However, if the Anniversary Edition was a great upgrade for the game, then all would be forgiven… eventually. Unfortunately, Fallout 4: Annual Edition is a broken, unbalanced mess that Bethesda is selling at full price.
Several problems with the version were listed in an informative video by Fallout aficionado Many a True Nerd. He highlights obvious problems and some issues that are not immediately obvious, such as commodity imbalances.
Fallout 4 is not an authentic experience
The most obvious problems are well documented by players. There are a lot of bugged buildings, broken textures and glitched quests. The infamous “lookup failed!” Scattered across Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition; A placeholder message when the game cannot find a suitable descriptor.
There are buildings marked with this error message, and entire non-player characters that are missing their faces and names. While the annual edition has a lot of fan-created content, Bethesda should have done its due diligence in testing each piece of content. For example, transferring Morgan Yu's spacesuit (from Prey) to the Arcjet system breaks many dungeons (and the spacesuit is nowhere to be found).
Speaking of fan-created content, the Anniversary Edition boasts 150 paid modes. However, most of these additions are re-skin and/or paint jobs for Pip-Boy, guns and armor. Despite the marketable number, these additives do not contain many substances.
Despite the many releases of Fallout 4 there is still no way to preview paint jobs for armor.
Perhaps the biggest part of the Anniversary Edition is that Bethesda hasn't properly integrated the Creation Club content into the rest of the game. There are pieces of lore-relevant armor, such as a Chinese stealth suit, that have been tossed into containers without explanation.
There is also creation club content that is easily accessible with powerful loot near the starting area of the game. The scaling of the game is completely off by the player's ability to get powerful weapons at level one. You also gain a large amount of experience for relatively trivial quests, especially when compared to the game's main quests.
If you're a new player wanting to experience Fallout 4 for the first time, stay away from the Anniversary Edition if you want an authentic experience.
