Embark Studios has given us some more details on Arc Raiders' Expedition Project, which launches on December 17th. To cut it short, it's the game's version of a progress wipe, which happens in many multiplayer games. However, Arc Raiders has made it optional for those who want to maintain their progress, while offering some benefits to those who choose it.
Players were previously unsure about wiping and looting all of their skills when the campaign project was first revealed, but now that we have more details, it doesn't seem like the trade-off is worth it. In addition to some temporary buffs, campaigners will receive some cosmetics, 12 extra stash slots, and skill points based on the stash (loot) you collect. Looks like the rewards aren't as lucrative as the devs thought.
Arc Raiders' Expedition Project Rewards are not worth it
While the temporary buffs and cosmetics look nice, it's the skill points that many players have a problem with. According to the blog post, “Your next raider can earn up to five skill points based on the total value of your stash and coins at the time of departure. One million coins worth equals one extra skill point for your new raider.”
The raiders have spent more than a month carrying out heists ranging from the simple to the legendary. If you planned to go on a campaign, this system encouraged you to grab that loot instead of going out and using it. Ideally, if a wipe was imminent, you'd want to go out guns blazing with your best loot, but this system forces you to hold onto it to gain more skill points for your post-wipe raider.
On Reddit, players have discussed that this will force them to not use any loot until the window closes on December 22nd. “We're days away from the wipe. It's time we burn through our stockpiles, take the most expensive weapons and armor we have because they're about to disappear,” said Flumingo1990. “But since skill points are tied to stash value, no one wants to risk their gear. The game is actively punishing me for using my best gear.”
Ark Riders must be nominated for at least this GOTY category
Arc Raiders sound design is excellent, and it's a real shame it didn't get a nod at this year's Game Awards.
Thanks to this caveat, you can expect a lot of raiders using the free loadout to build their stash value in hopes of getting more skill points later. So, instead of allowing this campaign to go out with a bang, it will fizzle out with low-tier gear.
