The Game Awards are coming up soon, and Final Fantasy fans think they'll be in for a surprise Square Enix announcement ahead of SoCase's premiere tomorrow night.
As noted by u/hashtagtylerh, the official Final Fantasy playlist was updated earlier today to add a new private video. Here are some interesting points to note: The playlist only includes major trailers and videos, not ports, ruling out a possible Switch 2 announcement. And two months ago, Final Fantasy 7 remake director Naoki Hamaguchi promised news on Part 3 in the “not too distant future.”
With that in mind, and the impending TGA, the consensus among the community is that the new unlisted video is the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 trailer, and it will debut as early as tomorrow. The evidence is compelling, but given that we have a video that isn't listed on the Final Fantasy playlist, it's worth taking the theory with a grain of salt.
Don't expect a Final Fantasy 9 remake
However, FF7 Remake Part 3 is actually on the tamer side of predictions. Another popular theory cropping up in the thread is that the unlisted video is a trailer for the long-awaited Final Fantasy 9 remake that leaked four years ago in an Nvidia breach. While other infringing games have come to light, such as the Tactics remake, reputable leakers like NateTheHate claim that FF9 may have been put on ice and even canceled.
Another idea is that the video is a Final Fantasy 14 trailer, as the playlist includes teasers for major expansions like Dawntrail. However, as u/foulveins points out, “we already have that trailer, and that patch will be released next week on December 16th”. So, it's unlikely that Square Enix will release another soon, even for Game Awards.
With all of that in mind, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 seems like the safest bet, but even the idea that this video will be unveiled at TGA is purely speculation. We just don't know. However, this little update lit a fire under the community, with everyone scrambling in excitement over their most anticipated games. Who knows? Maybe it will be an amazing Final Fantasy 11 remaster.
