Helldivers 2 is a simple game. Dav to a planet with three friends or randos, wipe out everything that isn't human, complete some objectives, and take off. It's the perfect gameplay loop, and that's why it's so popular. While some fans have asked for different modes like solos or duos, developer Arrowhead is standing firm on the formula. However, it looks like this may be changing.
In a recent tweet, creative director Johan Pilstad revealed that the studio is currently prototyping a new roguelite mode for Helldivers 2 (thanks GamesRadar+), which will completely change the game's structure. Of course, just because it's being prototyped, it doesn't mean it will actually launch, but it sounds very interesting.
Helldivers 2 may get a roguelite mode in the future
Responding to a fan who suggested the Roguelike mod concept, Pilstad casually stated, “Hey! We have a prototype of a Rogue-lite mod – it fundamentally changes the game!” It's a way to reveal to your fans that you're working on a potential new mod. Unfortunately, he didn't provide more details, but that doesn't stop me from making a concept.
With randomly selected weapons and tactics, I envision this roguelite mode as a singular experience. Like the base game, it will feature primary and secondary missions, the latter helping you unlock more of Helldivers' arsenal. Of course, I'm not a developer, so my version looks very close to the regular game, and not “fundamentally” different as Pilestedt said.
Dragons in Helldivers 2 was not on my 2025 bingo sheet
Seriously, who thought of this?
Maybe they'll flip the whole thing on its head and let us play as commanders who deploy Helldivers and tactics in different locations, like in Dispatch.
Only time will tell what this Roguelite mod will entail, and that's only if Arrowhead decides to bring it to the game. Recently, the devs have been working to fix performance issues that seem to crop up with each update. However, in a surprise move, the team released an optimization update that saw the game shrink from 154GB to just 23GB.
