The Old Republic's fortunes will begin before 2030, Leed says

A night after setting the collective internet on fire with the reveal of a new Star Wars title, set in the Old Republic era and led by none other than RPG legend himself Casey Hudson, the lead is helping to put out a separate fire, one related to its supposed release window.

Taking to Twitter, Hudson made it very clear that Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, or FOTOR as all the cool kids are calling it, will be released before 2030, which many were using in response to the game's sudden announcement.

I'm not getting younger!

His response appeared to be directed at veteran games journalist Jason Schrier, who in a separate post on Bluesky optimistically speculated that the studio's current lineup could bring FOTOR to 2030.

Last night's biggest surprise was Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, led by Casey Hudson, who directed Kotter (and Gann). Exciting news for a lot of people… but Lucasfilm says the studio was founded this year, which means 2030 is an *optimistic* estimate. Maybe it will be a PlayStation 7 game — Jason Schreier (@jasonschreier.bsky.social) 2025-12-12T16:30:44.271Z

As Schreier further noted in his reply to the post, Wonder Woman was also a game that had a big spot at The Game Awards, only to eventually get cancelled. Others also noted many games that debut with high-budget cinematics only to never see the light of day.

Star Wars Outlaws Nintendo Switch 2 Review

Don't be afraid to play Star Wars Outlaws on Nintendo Switch 2

Ubisoft Red Lynx has produced an extraordinary version of Star Wars Outlaws for the Nintendo Switch 2.

And if there's one thing Star Wars fans, especially Star Wars video game fans, are aware of, it's that sometimes things seem too good to be true.

Luck hasn't been on Star Wars' side either, so don't blame people for losing hope

Hudson's statement is a pretty bold announcement, especially when you consider that the team making the game, Arknaut Studios, is only a handful of months old. GameDev, as we are all fully aware, is a rather strung out process that can be extremely expensive and involve many changes and mods.

With that in mind, 2030 feels particularly generous given that we're already approaching 2026, leaving little time for a high-budget game, which will undoubtedly have a lot of IP hoops to jump through before release.

I can't be the only one who thinks about 1313 every time. As a Star Wars fan, it hurts to think what could have been.

Luck also hasn't been on Star Wars' side in recent years, with the likes of 1313 and a separate Mandalorian-based first-person shooter all canceled, as well as news of a remake of Star Wars: Eclipse and the Knights of the Old Republic disappearing.

Regardless, Hudson seems to have a lot of faith in his team and their ability to deliver. Time will eventually tell if this is the case. Here's hoping it is, so that it bucks the trend of ill-fated Star Wars titles.
