How Joy Boy ate the Devil Fruit remains unknown, but it is already clear in the story that he did in fact use the fruit's abilities, and that it was a previous Nika.
By his prowess he defeated twenty kings of the world and this war lasted for many years. Eventually, Joy Boy lost the fight and died, however, his wish was now inherited by none other than Luffy. Fans will certainly get a proper look at Joy Boy with Gear 5 when his own flashback begins, which should happen at some point in the final saga.
