Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Developer Sandfall Interactive has promised that, in the future, everything from the studio will be made by humans, not AI. To say that the use of generative AI in video game development is currently a controversial topic would be an understatement. Since its arrival in the mainstream a few years ago, game companies have been regularly called out for questionable AI use, and often the accusations turn out to be true. So when they found out Clair Obscur While AI was released with the property, some fans responded negatively.
However an amount of AI is present in the release build of the widely acclaimed RPG Obviously small, it still generated a reaction among many gamers. The art is just a placeholder and was quickly patched out, but its many uses result Clair Obscur Being disqualified from the Indie Game Awards and stripped of its Outstanding Debut and Game of the Year awards. It seems, though, that the developer has heard feedback loud and clear.
The most wish-listed game on Steam comes from the “AI-First” company, and it should raise more eyes
Amid the ongoing generative AI controversies, the most wishlisted game on Steam seems to have been overlooked when it was published by an “AI-first” company.
Clair Obscur developers will not use generative AI in the future
recently, Campaign 33 Director Guillaume Broche and Art Director Nicolas Maxson-Francombe sat down for a Q&A session with the YouTube channel Sushi. During the discussion, the topic of using AI was raised. Broche promised that while it's hard to predict what the future might bring for the industry, at least in Sandfall's games, “everything will be made by us.” When AI was used in development, he said Campaign 33The tech was still very new and was seen as just a useful tool. “We tried it, and we didn't like it. It felt wrong.”
At least for now, like it or not, it seems that AI is here to stay and will likely become more ubiquitous over time. Recently, another favorite game company came under fire for its use of AI when the multi-award-winning developer behind it, Larian Studios. Baldur's Gate 3Admitted during a Bloomberg interview to using the technology to “create PowerPoint presentations, develop concept art, and write placeholder text.” Sven Vincke, founder of Larian, clarified that no generative AI assets will make their way into it. divinityAnother project from the studio, but this one has only slightly dampened the response.
Vincke said in his interview with Bloomberg that while AI has not significantly improved the efficiency of teams, its lack of use could ultimately be detrimental if competitors adopt it widely. Renowned developer Hideo Kojima seems to be of the same mind. He has previously stated that, while he doesn't use AI to create art, he sees the potential to create deep systems that can dynamically respond to player behavior. In fact, Kojima has said that he wants to make a game to train AI because it currently “doesn't know much.”
Both Sandfall Interactive and Larian Studios are currently dealing with the fallout after revealing they used AI in some aspects of creating their games, saying it would not permanently affect their success. Excited for the day ahead divinity The game by Larian is incredibly high, and Clair Obscur The Game Awards 2025 won a record number of categories, earning more wins than any other game in the event's history.
