A little more than seven months after The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered was released on PC, bringing the former Game of the Year winner to Steam with an array of features and a new mode in the form of “No Return,” a die-hard fan and creator have discovered what were apparently cut gameplay features that didn't make it into the final product.
Of note, The Last of Us Part 2 was one of the first major releases to be cracked by video game pirates on PC this year. Then, the floodgates opened and dozens more titles cracked as the year went on.
Now, they're working to bring those gameplay features to the PC release, showcasing what may have been the original vision from Naughty Dog for how The Last of Us Part 2 played.
HBO's The Last of Us is just another failed video game adaptation
I enjoyed the second season of HBO's The Last of Us, but I can see where this is going.
If you thought the last of us was done, then think again
On Twitter, Speclizer, a modder and content creator, shared his discovery of two features: “Peek Mode” and “Hold Up,” both of which never made it into the final product, but animations, scripts, and dialogue are also available in the game's files.
“Peek Up” is exactly what it sounds like, it allows players to see around corners, as well as objects below or above. Given the way the camera works in The Last of Us, it's easy to see why this feature might have been cut, as it likely provided zero gameplay benefit.
The real treat, however, is “Hold Up”, which allows you to sneak up behind an enemy and force them to raise their arms before controlling where they can go and which direction they can face. It feels very Metal Gear Solid V OG meets Splinter Cell.
As Speclizer demonstrates in a follow-up video, the feature is actually pretty neat and was almost certainly a core part of the gameplay.
That element rings even truer when you add in found dialogue scripts, such as “Don't do anything stupid” or “Hands where I can see them.”
Personally, I haven't had any issues with the gameplay in The Last of Us. It was completely tight where it should have been, but after watching these videos, it's clear that there were plans to make things a lot deeper.
When and if there is a third The Last of Us title, or, another re-release of (Shocker) Part 1 or Part 2, perhaps we will see the final form of these features.
