We were first introduced to the concept of Mega Evolution in Pokemon X and Y, but Pokemon Legends: ZA brings it back with dozens of new Mega Evolution forms of your favorite Pokemon to help make them more difficult to face in battle.
But not all Pokemon Mega Evolutions are designed the same, and for every Pokemon that looks cooler and more effective in its Mega form, there are many that are a little silly when you see them on the battlefield. They are powerful, sure, but at what cost?
Mega float

Develop Flabebe |

Defeat your “rivals” in Infinite ZA Royale |
While it's not one of the box art giants, Floette and Flabebe have become something of an icon Pokemon for games set in Kalos, Pokemon Legends: ZA. Although you'll often see AZ's Floette, that doesn't mean you can't visit the city's various gardens and grab one of your very own.
Pokemon Legends: ZA has 26 new Mega Evolutions, with the DLC adding at least 16 more
Almost doubling the number of Mega Evolutions.
After you beat Urbain or Taunie (whose appearance you're playing with a male or female physical trainer), you'll get Floatite, which allows you to have any of the many colors of float you get in Mega Evolve, but you'll lose a lot of the regular beauty in Mega Form. Its Eternal Flower gets bigger, and this cute little Pokemon kind of deviates from itself.
Mega Gyarados
|
Type it |
Water / Flight |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Evolve Magikarp or Capture a Gyarados |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Quasartico Inc. |
Gyarados has long been the most ferocious Water-type Pokemon in any game, and you'll find an equally powerful power distribution in Pokemon Legends: ZA, whether you catch a Magikarp and train it when you arrive in Lumios or take on Gyarados later in the main game.
And while we love the stat changes Mega Gyarados received for its transformative efforts, it looks a little less intimidating than before, somehow. Its massive rear wing is menacing, sure, but this fearsome snake seems to have shrunk slightly in length in its mega form, sounding more like an angry fly than anything else.
Mega Heracross
|
Type it |
Bug / Fight |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Trade Pikachu to Tracy or Capture the Heracross |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Quasartico Inc. |
While bug typing definitely got something of a makeover with Pokemon Legends: ZA, making them more competitively viable than before, Heracross has always been a good choice for these weak bug hunters. In this game, though, it's a true powerhouse, proving essential for many speedruns.
Mega Heracross gets some powerful stat changes with its Mega Form, but don't be afraid if it doesn't look a little sillier in the process. Its cheeks look puffy, its arms and legs are all very oddly shaped, and don't even get us started on that horn. Thankfully, the horn does good damage, or we'd be laughing in our box to hide this bug friend.
Mega slowbrow
|
Type it |
Water / Mental |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Capture Slowbrow |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Defeat Rogue Mega Slowbro |
We've seen Slowbrow get a lot of unique forms over the years, and all of them have been remarkably silly (honestly), but there was none cooler than the Mega Slowbrow form introduced to us back in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
Pokemon Legends: ZA – Complete Mega Evolution Guide
Legends take a different approach to Mega Evolution.
A strange gray sheller clipped onto Slowbro's tail makes remarkably uncomfortable progress as it reaches Slowbro's Mega Form, chewing up the entirety of the Hermit Crab Pokémon and acting as some sort of strange, living bodysuit.
If you capture Slowpoke and evolve it, you will get Slowbro's Galerian form instead of Cantonian, and Slowbro's Galerian form cannot Mega Evolve.
Mega Clefable
|
Type it |
Angel/Flight |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Capture Clefable or Develop Cleffa |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Quasartico Inc. |
While Clefable's regular appearance is completely dependent on its Fairy typing since its introduction in generation six, it was a common Pokemon before its addition, you'll find no shortage of proper battleable Fairy moves in the iconic, titular Fairy Pokemon.
After unlocking access to Clefablite when you defeat Jacinthe and reach Rank B in ZA Royale, you'll be able to buy your hard-earned ability to make Clefable go mega, but prepare for some silly visuals. Its wings grow into sort of proper butterfly wings, it gets a little beret-style hat, and we're not really fans of the empty look in Mega Cliffables eyes.
Mega Greniza
|
Type it |
Water / Darkness |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Froakie developed |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Fixed ranks in Ranked Battle Seasons |
Pokemon fans have absolutely loved Greninja ever since he debuted in his original jaunt with Kalos back in the Generation Six games, and we're all excited to see this fan-favorite frog make a comeback in Pokemon Legends: ZA. While its Mega Evolution takes some doing, Ranked Battles is your method of achieving it, you'll be in for a silly surprise the first time you Mega Evolve your Greninja.
This was one of the first Megas we got to see for Pokemon Legends: ZA, and fans have long been laughing about the speculation of a Reverse Pose Mega Greninja. Its water shuriken acts as a sticky ceiling for Greninja, so don't ever try to laugh at your awkward upside-down ninja pokemon with the camera.
Mega Feraligator
Reactions to the starters chosen for Pokemon Legends: ZA were mixed at best, with the original Kalos starters being sidelined in favor of a mix of starters from other areas of the Pokemon universe, but if you're a Water Trainer and stick with your typing early in the game, there's no doubt that you and your Feraligatr are in for quite a ride.
Will Mega Evolution Add Pokemon Legends: ZA?
Pokemon Legends: ZA is bringing back Mega Evolution, but can Pokemon get the cure?
And while we can certainly appreciate the sheer step up in power (who doesn't want to add more variety to Mega form?), we're not too sold on the Mega Feraligator's design. The giant crocodile skull mask is probably meant to be scary, but it's kind of silly and often gets in the way when you're looking around town.
Mega Dragalge
|
Type it |
Venom / Dragon |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Evolve Skrelp or Capture Dragalgae |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Quasartico Inc. |
When we ranked Dragalgae as our pick for the best Poison-type Pokemon to bring to your team in the base game for Pokemon Legends: ZA, we'd be lying if we didn't laugh a little when we first saw its Mega Evolution form.
The wings on its head are great and full, glowing purple to match its main body, but what about those weird eyeball angles? It's actual eye rests on its face, so maybe it's meant to be a distraction to other Pokemon in the wild to keep Dragaelgae safe, but it makes us laugh every time it looks our way.
Mega Victory Bell
|
Type it |
Grass/poison |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Evolve Bellsprout |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Defeat Rogue Mega Victreebel |
If you ever watched the original Pokemon anime back in the day when Ash and friends were roaming around the Kalos region trying to catch them all, you probably remember the iconic, piercing scream that Victreebel lets out when you first send it into the field. Well, that's the sound we made when we first saw Mega Victorybell.
Mega Victorybell was an early debut for the Pokemon Company when they brought the Mega Evolution mechanic back to the series in Pokemon Legends: ZA, but Pokemon has been laughed at since its debut, accusing older Gen One fans of being too hard on its inclusion.
Mega Starmy
Starmie is another Pokemon that we never really paid much attention to overall, until Pokemon Legends: ZA got it's possibly most ridiculous Mega Evolution form. Even though DLC has evolved since the game's release to include dozens of more interesting Mega Pokemon, fans have stuck with Starmie.
Not only is the body of its Mega Evolution pretty silly, but watching Mega Starmi chase you through Lumios City is a mix of fun and terrifying. Why did it make its legs like that…?
Pokemon fans are studying Legends: ZA's DLC for clues about the unknown Megas
