After weeks of speculating that Loki's skin would follow Marvel Rivals Roadmap, NetEase pulled back the curtain, something Lady Loki outfit players have been requesting for months was finally on the way. While there was initially some concern that it would just be a Loki cosplay for Hela, fans breathed a sigh of relief when it was revealed that it would indeed be a Loki skin. Along with a female costume, a different body, and longer hair, the female Loki skin also boasts a completely different voice, with Abby Trott (actor from Magic) portraying the gender-bending trickster. Marvel Rivals Its Lady Loki went up with the skin, and naturally, players expect it to be the first of many.
Marvel RivalsThe Lady Loki skin also surprised players with its price tag. Considering the extra work that went into re-recording all the voice lines, players expected it to cost more, but instead it costs the standard 2,400 units (2,700 with the Lady Loki emote bundle). It will be on offer between January 2 and January 29.
While NetEase has hit it out of the park with Lady Loki, and there is interest for similar cosmetics, players shouldn't expect to start seeing a store full of skins like this anytime soon. There are a few major reasons for this, so Lady Loki is sure to be a big seller that inspires similar cosmetics here and there, Marvel Rivals “Eco Fighter”-like cosmetics can be very selective. For anyone hoping for more major makeovers like this one for Loki, which releases tomorrow, here's where you should temper your expectations a bit.
Why Marvel Rivals' Lady Loki Skin Will Probably Stand Alone For Some Time
First and foremost is the fact that adding a skin like Lady Loki is no easy task. Unlike throwing a voice changer at the protagonist, altering the model to look like a wolf or changing their costume, Lady Loki requires NetEase for a different actor to re-record all of the protagonist's voice lines. While team-ups, battle chatter, and the like have already been confirmed to be present, it remains to be seen if pre-match conversations will also be changed. Regardless, it's clear that NetEase wants to go above and beyond with anything. Injustice 2 The premiere skin, and revisiting all those dialogues will undoubtedly take time.
Naturally, players hope or expect female versions of any male to flood the store Marvel Rivals The characters, or vice versa, should not get their hopes up. Not only does it take time to craft these kinds of skins, but NetEase is also closely watching Lady Loki's sales to see if similar cosmetics are worth pursuing. Sure, there are people talking about a gender-swapped Loki, but if it doesn't really sell, the same cosmetics that completely transform the hero roster aren't going to be worth the extra time and resources.
Reason 2: Multiple skins like Lady Loki can create huge missed opportunities
Even if Lady Loki proves to be beneficial and players will be seeing her in every lobby for the foreseeable future, NetEase still won't go overboard with the same skin. Sure, it will start making more of them, but it doesn't want to limit its potential for entirely new heroes. Coming up with a character Marvel Rivals Each month, NetEase must make room for the roster to grow. Lady Loki works because she is still Loki, the god of mischief as he often changes form. He has all the same abilities, the same fighting style, and most importantly, the same attitude.
That's why NetEase can't add every female version of a Marvel hero and call it a day. Take Spider-Gwen for example. Not only does the punk rock version of Gwen have a very different attitude than Peter, but her fighting style is just as different, focusing on ballet-like moves and kicks. Kate Bishop is a similar case, as her personality is very different from Clint Barton, not to mention her great athleticism and fencing skills. It just doesn't feel right to have Kate say Clint's lines and act like he does. Jane Foster's Thor is yet another example, as gamers will miss her different attitude and her unique handling of Mjolnir. And why make Clea a Doctor Strange clone when she could have a whole new arsenal of spells to play with? She-Hulk, Polaris, X-23, Ironheart – the list goes on.
The same logic applies to non-gender-bind skins; Why give Venom a Carnage skin when Carnage can be his own hero with different dialogue and abilities (like making weapons out of symbiotes)?
Marvel Rivals still has room to add more characters like Lady Loki
While it's true that NetEase has to be selective about its choices for gender-swap skins so as not to rob players of potentially fun heroes, it still has plenty of options available. Some of the best ones include:
-
Lady Deadpool
-
She-Venom
-
Captain Carter
-
Rachel Cole (penalty)
-
Gwenpool
Sure, if NetEase wanted to make skins like Lady Loki a core part of the game, they could start randomly pulling gender-swapped characters from Earth-TRN454, where every character is gender-bind. Before it gets there, though, the options above are all good to pursue, as they are important characters and therefore more likely to feel like natural additions. Although all signs point to Lady Loki as a surefire success, it's up to NetEase to determine. If this is the case, such cosmetics are to be expected eventually – but players shouldn't expect them to come out quickly, nor should they expect characters that work as standalone heroes to be wasted on skins. NetEase has already stated that characters like Miles Morales, War Machine, and Sam Wilson will be their own heroes and not skins, and the same reasoning applies to existing female spins.
