Some of the best detective stories of all time try to hide things in plain sight, only for readers to be embarrassed they didn't see it right away. Anime openings tend to do this too, spoiling things later in the season that manga fans might catch on to, but new viewers might miss. Even the best RPGs that have ever hit PlayStation consoles have had players pay attention to the obvious story bits up front.
10 Underrated JRPGs That Could Be Called Masterpieces
They may not have the impact of Final Fantasy 7, but these JRPGs are still admirable.
Some players like to play sleuth and guess the twist. All of these won't exactly be fun, but they're worth thinking about. Were they set up to wink at the players, or were they overseen by the developers? It may be a secret they take to their graves. Anyway, these plot points are too complicated to discuss at length, but here are some good summaries.
There will be spoilers for the following examples.
Final Fantasy 8
Guardian Force
Final Fantasy 8's A version of the summons is called Guardian Forces or GFs. Players can take them to characters, draw magic from monsters, and then cast spells on their GF to raise stats instead of relying on equipment. This is a beneficial system for warrior cadets like Squall, the hero, but there is a problem. If players initially spend time talking to everyone in Balamb Garden and reading emails, they will learn about the downsides of these GFs taking over brain space, including memory loss. It helps set up the entire playable cast sharing collective amnesia about knowing each other as kids, including magic, but the GFs can be blamed just as much.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Gone too soon
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 There are a lot of wild revelations, and players can make big predictions involving the entire world that exists in a fantasy picture. This will put some deep guesswork into the player, but one twist they can easily predict is the fate of Gustav, who starts out as the hero. Each character has a skill tree, and his is very small compared to everyone else's, meaning he can get boosts to expand it later, or he'll die. This small detail may be enough to clue players into his death in the first act.
Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Speaking of Tockles
Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of Elusive Age is a long game, and it takes the usual time to reach the estimated final boss, which is around 60 hours. Surprisingly, there are small ghost-like creatures that players can see as they travel around, which they later know are called Tackles. Players cannot talk to them, and no one acknowledges their existence, as only the player can see them. When the players reach the final battle, and they are not addressed, or long before that, the players could assume that they were bound for the big reveal, which they were. After this boss fight ends badly, players can talk to Head Tockle to go back in time, fix things, easily adding another twenty to thirty hours to the experience.

After passing out, players wake up and try to find their child in a newly discovered post-apocalyptic state. But, given that cryosleep can last for years, the players probably expected their child to be an old coder by the time they saw it again.
Final Fantasy 10
Dreams of faith
Final Fantasy 10 opens with Tidus Zanarkand is playing blitzball in his home, which is then attacked by a giant tidal wave and monsters. After fighting for his life, Tidus wakes up from his home, and when he finds civilization again, Yuna and her parents find it impossible that he came from Jarkand because it was destroyed a thousand years ago. It's a mystery, and some players might think there's a multi-dimensional or time travel situation, but it's even darker than some fans might imagine. Because it is established early on that people, who are dead, can still take on a physical form in the form of Faith's dreams, they may realize that Tidus is essentially a ghost.
NieR: Automata
Humanity's last hope

Their mission is given to them by human command, but no humans are ever seen. Players will first play as 9s, then 2b, and then finally A2. After three missions, players will learn that humanity died long ago, and the AI controlling the space station carries on their legacy as if they were still human. Since the players never see an actual human in space, they can predict this mode from the start, or at least assume there is something fishy about it.
Kingdom Hearts 2
RPG Anagrams
For players involved in Interquel, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of MemoriesJoe Roxas was in the beginning Kingdom Hearts 2 There was no brain. While the players do not learn that they are anagrams in the game, and their true names are not revealed until later sequels, it becomes clear that Roxas must be an anagram of Sora with an X added to it. Great Korean RPGs that can rival any JRPG
What makes a KRPG different from a JRPG?
Roland doesn't meet his twin hours in the game, which is questionable, given the somewhat early introduction of a masked villain named Doloran. In the end, it was revealed that he was this world's version of Roland, which was pretty clear that it was another anagram situation with Doloran having an extra o.
The nature of man
Metaphor: ReFantazio Takes place in a fantasy world where monstrous monsters, called humans, often serve as bosses in the game, and are as dangerous as humanoid titans. Attack on Titan. It might be a stretch, but some players could figure it out, especially if they're over Attack on TitanWhich is very similar.
