As a hero shooter fan, 2025 was a great year. After a depressing 2024 where consentA game I personally enjoyed, it was killed before it had a chance, both Marvel Rivals and Overwatch 2 It was a big year. Marvel Rivals Hit its stride, proving it can deliver new content faster than any other hero shooter with monthly character drops and an amazing PvE experience. Overwatch 2 justify its existence with sweeping changes across the board; A lore codex, Progression 2.0, the perk system, and the spectacular Stadium mode all dropped within a few months. While 2026 will be equally good for fans of both sports, it feels like one sport will have a clear edge with the first season of the new year.
This, obviously, is not ideal. I am someone who plays both these games equally, alternating between them Overwatch 2 and Marvel Rivals Every day so that I am not bored with any title. I imagine others have a similar view, so the idea that one of these games is in line for disappointment is concerning. Yet in view of what has already been said Marvel Rivals' General format for upcoming content, and Overwatch 2It is a reasonable assumption that fans of the latter are in for a run-of-the-mill season. Hopefully, I'll be wrong, but the signs are there. And if I'm right, and Overwatch 2 Start stumbling, that's not good news, even for the most tribal Marvel Rivals fans.
Why Marvel Rivals Season 6 is shaping up to be better than Overwatch 2 Season 21
Marvel Rivals Calling NetEase specifically, 2026 ended 2025 with a pretty bold promise to blow its first full year in the market out of the water. Marvel RivalsFirst year “warm-up.” It's said that more PvE content is on the way for those in love with Marvel Zombies (Overwatch 2 doesn't) as well as telling players exactly who's coming in Season 6: Deadpool and Elsa Bloodstone. The Merc with a Mouth is easily the most popular character missing Marvel RivalsSo his long overdue arrival is sure to give a huge boost to the players. As for Elsa, she's very niche, but Rivals Angela succeeded in making her popular, so maybe the sassy monster hunter will shine as well.
Deadpool's role is currently a mystery, with the anti-hero switching categories weekly to mess with players. Taking fourth wall breaking humor to another level he is now listed as a map.
Overwatch 2On the other hand, the content will fight with the arrival of Deadpool with a hero season. Because of both Overwatch 2’s high level of polish and its need to create characters from scratch that, unlike those pulled from the larger comics canon, Team 4 could only release characters every other season, meaning Vendetta was the last character we would see for several months. It used to be balanced by “off-seasons” with new maps for the main game modes… but sadly, that hasn't happened for a while. The last new map for casual players was Flashpoint Arena Atelis in June of last year, but competitive enthusiasts like myself have been waiting for the new map since June 2024. That's a year and a half without another core map experience, and the pool is pretty stale.
Why? Overwatch 2 As the map dries up more, the logical answer is that players are the culprits pushing against the Clash game mode. Blizzard may have built several maps for Clash before dropping the mod, which could be released in 2025. Inevitably, that work is wasted, setting Team 4 back and leaving the community without a map. Alternatively, perhaps Blizzard has seen map voting data that indicates older maps are always chosen by fans, pushing the studio to quietly move away from new maps. Still, new maps are needed here and there even though the map-hero-map-hero season cycle is no longer there. Given how long it's taken for a new competitive map, though, there's a real chance that Season 21 has no new heroes or maps to offer, setting it up for failure.
Why Overwatch 2 Season 21 Potential Letdown Will Be Bad News For Everyone
Overwatch 2The 21st season can definitely surprise us, bringing a new map or a big addition like a stadium. Personally, though, I'm worried, and all hero shooter fans should be — yes, even the biggest critics Overwatch 2 He who only enjoys Marvel Rivals. Competition benefits consumers and is important for quality content so that one side is not too comfortable; Which is why, even though I'm a PlayStation guy at heart, I'm not happy that the consoles won the war. Much like I don't want to keep fumbling the Xbox, as it could see the PlayStation making less of the games I like as there's less pressure on its hardware to get the eyeballs. Overwatch 2 Dropping will allow NetEase to be satisfied.
The best things about Marvel Rivals It has free unlockables. This is one of the most difficult areas anywhere Overwatch 2 Not arguing against fans Rivals Doing well, all the time Overwatch 2 Usually only gives free recolors in its events, Rivals Just to play your game has provided the following modes:
-
Wasteland Ultron
-
Iron Spider Spider-Man
-
Symbiote the Thing
-
Mrs. Barnes Black Widow
-
Business Shark Jeff
-
Blade Knight Blade
-
Cuddly Fuzzlefin Jeff
-
Flora Maiden Mantis
In a world where Marvel Rivals No need to continue with prosperity Overwatch 2Maybe these jaw-dropping event skins are less common. Players definitely paid for something like the Iron Spider, so we're really lucky we got to earn it instead. The same goes for generous chrono-token events that let players collect free currency, or paid mini-passes that still include free skins and items. With less competition, NetEase will have an easier time dropping controversial gacha mechanics like the current Psylocke skin, or less exciting freebies to earn. If a poor season happened 21, and it was followed by more disappointing seasons, Rivals May feel less pressure to go above and beyond, changes accepted begrudgingly because gamers will say, “At least not this one. Overwatch.”
Obviously, this should not happen. Even so Overwatch 2 As much as Season 21 disappoints as I worry it will, Blizzard can right the ship with a content-filled Season 22 and reignite the rivalry. and out Overwatch 2The recent China-specific incident controversy, it has been in a rule, so there is reason to believe that Blizzard is cooking something good behind the scenes. Still, if I notice that the new maps are missing and that Overwatch 2’s non-hero seasons often feel barren, NetEase certainly does, and it starts to take its foot off the pedal when it knows those windows are approaching. Hopefully, Blizzard has a trick up its sleeve Overwatch 2 Season 21, because Marvel Rivals Bringing out the big guns with Deadpool. And if both sports aren't thriving and actively pushing each other to do better, all their fans will be worse off for it.
