Some ARC Raiders players are using the game's config files to cheat

something ARC Raiders On PC it has reportedly managed to bypass the game's camera limitations by editing a hidden configuration setting, giving itself a much wider field of view and the huge advantage that comes with it. The exploit appears to have been inadvertently enabled by the recent ARC Raiders patch, although developer Embark Studios seems to have already patched it.

Like any other remotely popular multiplayer game out there, ARC Raiders Cheaters have been a problem since its release. Over time, many of those problems can be traced back to paid trainers that bad actors sell on third-party sites, allowing other bad actors to gain various unfair advantages. Sometimes, something less premeditated becomes reality, enabling opportunists to take advantage. In the latest example of the latter, some FOV settings were recently tweaked by players in an unnecessary way.

Ridiculous FOV allowed for the recently discovered ARC Raiders exploit

In the last few days till January 10, reports ARC Raiders Players are surfacing online looking for ways to change the game's off-field scene. The story became so widespread that many apparently cheating individuals with outrageously wide FOVs were occasionally streaming their exploits on Twitch. Based on VODs reviewed by Game Rant, ARC Raiders' The recently introduced Stella Montis was one of the most cheat-affected maps earlier this month. That's not because the exploit was difficult to replicate at a different level; In all likelihood, Stella Montis' over-representation on FOV cheaters' favorite maps is likely related to the fact that it's designed specifically with frequent PvP in mind, making any sort of advantage – fair or not – potentially very attractive.

We recently pushed a hotfix removing the “NewConsole” command. This feature was never meant to be player facing.

We continue to investigate related reports and may take action as appropriate to protect fair play and the integrity of the game.

According to an official notice posted on the game's Discord server on Saturday, Embark had already found a way to fight back. ARC Raiders Fraudsters relied on this particular technique until January 10, a day after its information became widespread. A studio representative suggested that the issue came down to the inadvertent ability to activate the so-called “NewConsole” command in the PC version of the game, resulting in being able to change one's field of view. “This feature was never intended to be player facing,” the official wrote. While Embark has patched out a specific method of editing the FOV, the developer is currently monitoring telemetry data and other information sources for any related exploits that may have slipped through the cracks as well.

The FOV tweak was just one of many ways console commands allowed players to gain an unfair advantage, provided they knew what they were doing. Using the very basic toolset of Unreal Engine 5, it is possible to leverage its console to disable individual visual effects such as shadows, dust, and fog, all of which increase visibility and thus provide a significant edge over competing shooters, extraction or otherwise. In this case, enabling the console was allegedly as simple as editing a configuration file on the PC. That's not unusual, but it's usually easily prevented, as Unreal Engine 5 gives developers the option to easily disable console access in game builds. While it is generally applied ARC Raiders Updates, it looks like a step was missed in the last patch.

This feature was never meant to be player facing.

It remains unclear how many players were directly affected ARC Raiders Fraudsters are exploiting this specific oversight. On the one hand, the fact that this exploit became widespread enough to appear on Twitch suggests that it has been active for some time. On the other hand, given the game's broader cheating issues, distinguishing this particular exploit from others using publicly available data is difficult, if not impossible. As for Embark Studios, the developer is still reimbursing players for lost items in games that contain confirmed cheats. However, this compensation seems inconsistent and depends on the studio's ability to identify the perpetrators after the fact.
