The best parts about any new game reveal are all the hidden details people start finding out later, or information shared immediately after a big trailer, and Fable is no exception.
Since its full reveal during Thursday's Xbox Developer Direct, fans have been pouring over every minute detail and Playground Games, for their part, has shared plenty of information about what to expect when the game releases later this fall.
That said, not every quest is bound to be fun, and in this case, fans have discovered that, on Steam, the game is tagged as a single-player experience. In other words, don't expect a basic co-op experience like the one in Fable 2 or the souped-up version present in Fable 3.
Fable is going to be all about finding happiness in the world
I can't wait to live a dull, boring life in a playground games story.
“As someone who only plays on their own, I love that now, achievements don't force you to multi-player to get them all,” one fan wrote in response to the change.
Meanwhile, there were others who were hoping for something along the lines of Fable 3's chaotic experience.
“I don't know why so many people are apparently happy about this? If it was co-op, it wouldn't take away from the single-player experience,” wrote another.
Go figure, the potential lack of co-op play is just one of many things from the original set of Fable titles that won't return when this revival finally drops.
New Fable aims to be the Fable you love but without these core elements
That's because outside of co-op play, it was revealed by the game itself that the popular canine companion mechanic will not be present in any way, shape or form. This is a change that other developers couldn't get around.
“There are a few people on the team who were having fun asking me this question because I cut it a while ago. You know? For developmental reasons, right?” said Ralph Fulton, general manager of the playground. “I don't need to go into more detail than that, other than to say that there are quite a few people in the team who have not forgiven me for that decision.”
And if that wasn't enough, don't expect any character morphing in the new fable, that the new system moves away from “objective good and evil” ideas. Instead, players could have multiple reputations, something that would be ruined, if by chance you were a horned creature screaming evil.
Understandably, some die-hard fans are upset by all of these developments. Credit where credit is due, for their part, the playing field is not generous about these things and their removal.
