Tommy Gunn learns from the aging Rocky in Rocky V, then cheats
Rocky and Gunn don't even settle their feud in the ring
Tommy Gun arrives at an uncertain time in Rocky's life. Rocky may have won his battle with Drago, but he has a plethora of medical complications to show for it. Balboa initially trains Gunn as his replacement, only for the young boxer to betray him before the climax. Rocky V. Gunn is meant to reflect what Rocky could be, but he's just not believable or remotely likable.
Gunn and Balboa never made it to the ring, resolving their differences on the road. Their final battle is extremely reflective of Gunn's overall character. Rocky challenges him only after he brazenly attacks one of Rocky's greatest friends. If Balboa and Gunn ever meet in the ring, it will end very badly for the reckless rookie. Gunn's boxing and physicality aren't enough to keep up with the Italian stallion, especially in his prime.

Mason 'The Line' Dixon is largely meant to represent the arrogance of the modern generation. After losing to a prime version of Balboa during a simulation, Dixon challenges the aging boxer to a real exhibition. Instead of giving up, Rocky begins training to prove he can still hold his own in the ring. Balboa's last bout isn't about winning, it's about proving he can go the distance, but his opponent makes it look a little too easy.

Despite their age difference, Balboa gives Dixon a run for his money several times in the fight. Dixon made several attempts to end the fight prematurely, but he could not compete with Rocky's experience. Dixon will walk away with a huge sense of respect after their duel, but his boxing abilities are nothing to write home about. If he really had gone up against Rocky in his prime, Balboa would have walked the floor with him.

Ricky Conlon is Creed's first real rival

Ricky Conlan provides the first real stepping stone for Adonis Creed. Conlan also technically beats Creed due to a decision by the judges. What feels like a sour moment is only meant to reflect Rocky's first fight against Apollo. However, Conlan won't be able to handle it against Balboa or Creed in their prime. Ricky beats Adonis in the first movie, but Creed only becomes a better boxer from there.
The Irish boxer certainly has the skills, but they aren't enough to compete with the other titans on the Rocky roster. Conlan is very similar to a traditional and realistic boxer. He's not invulnerable, but he's still very powerful in his own right. That said, Creed would knock out Conlan in their only rematch, repairing the only major loss of his career.

Clubber Long is an unstoppable force of nature who capitalizes on the now arrogant Rocky. Rocky III. He forces the former champion to think outside the box and admits that he may not know everything about the sport of boxing. Lang's challenge pushes Rocky to seek unconventional means of training, and Rocky finds himself turning to his former rival, Apollo Creed, for help. Each of Lang's punches is deadly in its own right, and they force the Italian stallion to take a much more defensive strategy.
Lang serves as Rocky's more capable opponent, and is easily the third-toughest person Balboa has ever faced. His bad attitude is further supported by his brutal and unforgiving attacks. If not for Apollo's training, Rocky might have been out of boxing forever. Thankfully, Rocky's partnership with his former enemy gave him strength and knowledge.

His beef with Creed isn't inherently personal, but Victor quickly makes up for it.
