The hello The franchise has had its ups and downs, but it's hard to feel like it's at an “up” point right now. A once-iconic franchise and leader in the FPS space has taken a backseat to mainstream gaming, but more so mainstream culture, and that's a devastating blow, e.g. hello It has the potential to become a pillar of the industry.
For many fans, the hello The recession began when Bungie left the franchise behind. The developer who crafted the first three hello Games, too Halo 3: ODST and Hello: Reach outPublished separately from Microsoft and its specifications destinyA game that, while not perfect, was a natural evolution of the studio's vision at the time. Meanwhile, the hello The IP was assigned to 343 Industries, a development team created by Xbox specifically for the franchise in Bungie's wake. While 343 will add value hello In its original entries, especially Mechanically, it is widely believed that the new studio struggled to capture and develop the philosophy and character of the IP, which diminished the franchise's impact and appeal over time. But why exactly? hello Follow its trajectory, and how will 343 Industries, recently rebranded as Halo Studios, pull it out of the quagmire?
Why Halo was special in the first place
Today it may not seem so revolutionary, however Halo: Combat Evolved's single-player campaign was a revelation when it first greeted the world in 2001. For some perspective, some of the greatest first-person shooters were released before the first. hello were Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Turokand Doom 64-Such experiences were what audiences expected from the genre at the time. Make no mistake, those games and others are still special and effective in their own right, but hello Took things to the next level.
The fight evolvedThe shooting mechanics of are very different from contemporary shooters, including shooters below hello Banner: Basic mechanics like sprinting and ADS are nowhere to be found (with a few exceptions), cover is only occasionally useful in battles, and guns don't match the real-world weapons players use. If anything, the first hello The shooting mechanics of the 90s were less a reinvention and more a refinement of them. helloIts gameplay, even today, is remarkably responsive, versatile, expressive, and open, never locking a player into just one optimal playstyle.
more than that, The fight evolvedThe campaign was captivating and cinematic as were other games of the time. Bungie didn't exactly approach the campaign as a movie, but it's clear that a lot of thought was given to the pacing, atmosphere and drama, where the story feels immersive and well-crafted, with twists and new ideas communicated with ease. This is something that will be improved in future Bungie games Halo 2 and Hello 3 Especially with some of the most memorable and awe-inspiring setpieces in gaming history.
That is an effect worth mentioning hello Games, especially Halo 2 and Hello 3Online was in console multiplayer. These games were instrumental in building the early Xbox Live community, paving the way for the online shooter boom of the 2000s.
Pros and cons of current Halo games
Naturally, Bungie casts a long shadow, and Halo Studios has had trouble breaking out of it. But I've always felt that gamers can be a little hard on newbies hello Sometimes the parent, the studio, doesn't recognize or appreciate the value they add to the franchise. For one thing, the shooting mechanics of Modern hello The games are much improved compared to their predecessors Hello infinite Having the best gunplay in the series. And for better or worse, 343 Industries / Halo Studios has used it hello A formula of years, be it by making it Hello infinite By adding more traversal options in an open world or Hello 5. It was easy to make just by trying Hello 3 Again, that's why it's respectable that 343 / Halo Studios has tried to do new things.
At the same time, though, these are not enough to keep new ideas hello Ahead of the industry. By adding mechanics like sprinting and ADS, hello Slowly started to feel more like something Call of DutyAnd as a result has lost some of its original gameplay identity. This conformity extends to other aspects of modernity hello Also, like its scenario design, setpiece design, and overall campaign structure. Perhaps most crushingly, the new hello The games feel rudderless from a narrative perspective, with new lore concepts and characters introduced only to be forgotten in the next entry. Storytelling is vital helloAnd it often feels like 343/Halo Studios hasn't been confident enough in this regard, regularly abandoning this set up idea.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the decision to remake the campaign Halo: Combat Evolved. This is logically the opposite of what Halo Studio should be doing right now: hello Need new ideas that work, not repeat old ones. Broadly speaking, audiences want hello To re-energize them, and recreate a part of a classic game – a game that is already more than playable. Master Chief Collection – Probably not going to do that.
To be fair The fight evolved A remake has the potential to create a whole new audience of fans for its PS5 release, and it makes sense for PlayStation users to start with the original game in the series.
How Halo can reclaim its former glory
It's easy to see helloAs we look at many other depreciated classic franchises, and think all hope is lost. I'll be the first to admit that I've felt pessimistic about the franchise over the years, and have often wondered how much time it has left. But then what am I thinking? hello The games have been perfected, and I feel a renewed sense of optimism. Halo Studios needs to focus on its strengths, such as physics-based combat, and less on unnecessary or unnatural gimmicks, such as the disappointing Battle Pass system. Hello infinite. Most importantly, Halo Studios needs to renew its vision hello The story, rather than reacting to what it wants the audience to do. It may even mean leaving the Master Chief behind for the time being.
And also in the future hello While games may not reach the heights of their predecessors, it's not the end of the world. There may still be room hello As an undulating legacy franchise, with some amazing entries, some good ones, and some great ones. Maybe that's another great one hello It's closer than we thought.
