On March 1, LEGO releases its first wave of SMART Play sets. For the uninitiated, SMART Play is LEGO's latest experiential play feature, which revolves around the SMART Brick. This special technology-filled brick produces lights and sounds based on the SMART tags and SMART Minifigures around it. LEGO is testing this new feature with a whole wave of LEGOs Star Wars sets, all of which are designed around SMART Brick functionality, although it's important to note that some do not include the Brick.

A week or so out from release, there's a lot of caution surrounding these LEGOs Star Wars Smart play set. On paper, these sets look much less detailed than regular LEGO Star Wars set, but cost quite a bit more. The SMART Play Luke's Landspeeder set, for example, has only 215 pieces and retails for $39.99, while the 2020 Luke Skywalker's Landspeeder (75271) set has 236 pieces and retails for $29.99. To make matters worse, SMART Play Luke's Landspeeder set doesn't even include a SMART Brick.

Only three sets at LEGO this March Star Wars The wave actually includes the SMART bricks needed to access the play features they're all designed around, including Darth Vader's TIE Fighter set, Red Five X-Wing, and Throne Room Duel & A-Wing set. This means that to access the play features of an inexpensive set like Luke's Landspeeder, fans will have to spend at least an additional $69.99 for a set that includes the SMART Brick.
