Assassin's Creed Hexe is reportedly so good that “everyone at Ubisoft” wants it.

Ubisoft hasn't said much about Assassin's Creed Hexe since it was first unveiled in 2022, but various reports and leaks indicate that it will return to more linear roots than the sprawling RPGs we're used to.

While this may sound promising, especially amid complaints of bloat with recent titles such as Valhalla and Shadows , concerns are starting to grow following yesterday's news that creative director Clint Hawking (Watch Dogs: Legion, Far Cry 2) is leaving the project.

In response to these concerns, Insider Gaming Editor-in-Chief Tom Henderson claimed that development is actually going well, and that Hexe is currently one of the most highly-anticipated projects within Ubisoft.

Assassin's Creed Hexe is a project that everyone at Ubisoft wants to work on.

“Some people will be wary of this change, but Assassin's Creed Hexe is a project that everyone at Ubisoft wants to work on because of how well it's shaping up,” Henderson posted on X.

What we know about the Assassin's Creed hex

It's unclear why Hawking stepped down — whether it was prompted by the upheaval at Ubisoft or if he left the project of his own volition — but he's being replaced by Black Flag and Genesis creative director Gene Gusdon.

“We express our sincere gratitude [Hocking] for his vision, creative contributions and dedication over the years, and we wish him the best in his next chapter,” a spokesperson said. “The game will deliver something unique within the Assassin's Creed franchise. We look forward to sharing more information in the future.”

Several reports have alleged that Hex will take place in 16th-century Germany at the height of the witch trials, with new protagonist Ella, who has supernatural powers, taking center stage. Borrowing its setting, the game will reportedly build on the fear system from the Jack the Ripper DLC in Assassin's Creed Syndicate, though Ubisoft has yet to discuss any gameplay details.

Ubisoft's own Marc-Alexis Cote said that Hexe would be “a very different kind of Assassin's Creed game”.

Details are scarce at the moment, and it's been suggested that Hexe won't launch until after 2027 at the earliest – meaning the rumored Black Flag remake and Invictus multiplayer spin-off. So, it will still be some time before we hear any official news about the game.
