Blastoise: A starter Pokemon with serious staying power

Blastoise is arguably the best starter Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. It shines in the early game, especially with its versatility and solid typing. One of the biggest advantages of starting with Squirtle is the ability to learn moves like Dig as Route 8, which is perfect for taking down Lt. Surge's Electric-type team.

As you progress, Blastoise's ability to learn Bite also provides great coverage against Sabrina's Psychic-type Pokemon, which are particularly weak against physical attacks. Blastoise is a reliable tank, thanks to its high defensive stats, and it can handle multiple threats while dealing good damage. Surf, which it teaches naturally, is one of the best water-type moves in the game and a staple in Blastoise's offensive arsenal.

Squirtle evolves into Wartortle at level 16, then Blastoise at level 36.

Snorlax: Heavy attacker you never have to box

Snorlax is a powerhouse in terms of both bulk and offensive output. You can find it in Route 12 after you use the Poke Flute to pick it up. At level 30, Snorlax comes with useful moves like Headbutt, Yawn, Rest, and Snore. When it reaches level 33, it gains access to Body Slam, a move that can paralyze opponents, adding more utility to its arsenal.

Snorlax's real charm lies in its Thick Fat ability, which halves the damage from fire- and ice-type attacks. This makes it a durable wall that can block even the most powerful hits. It serves as an amazing offensive threat thanks to moves like Hyper Beam (if you're willing to slide recharge) and Body Slam, as well as good damage with Shadow Ball.

Snorlax is first encountered in Route 12 after getting the Poke Flute from the Pokemon Tower.

Arcanine: Almost a legendary with the best ability in the game

Arcanine is a powerful Fire-type with stats that are so high it almost sounds like a legendary Pokemon. Fire red and leaf green. It has a BST (Base Status Total) of 555, and it has access to fear as an ability, which lowers opponents' attacks to reduce incoming damage. You can pivot on Arcanine to specifically scare, and its offensive abilities make it useful in many other matchups.

Arcanine's move pool is diverse and includes Flamethrower, Extreme Speed, and Bite. This gives it great coverage for a variety of threats, though keep in mind that it struggles against ground-types. However, for Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreenGiovanni, you can easily use Blastoise.

How to get Arcanine Initial in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:

Growlithe, which evolves into Arcanine, is available early in Route 7 and Route 8.
After reaching Celadon City's Mall, use the Fire Stone to evolve Growlithe into Arcanine.

If you have Pokemon LeafGreen, like I did, you can swap Arcanine for Ninetales. The process for moves and evolution is very similar, and while Arcanine is overall better for intimidation and higher stats, Ninetales is the next best thing.

Jynx: The ultimate control specialist with great coverage

Jynx is one of the best special attackers Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreenWith its unique dual typing of Psychic and Ice. It's great for controlling the pace of battle by putting enemies to sleep with its Lovely Kiss move. With a 75% accuracy rate for sleep, Jynx can shut down opponents, setting them up for an easy knockout. Additionally, Ice Beam and Psychic are two of the most reliable STAB moves in the game, giving Jynx great offensive coverage.

Jynx is also a great choice for both Lorelei and Sabrina due to her Ice and Psychic typing, but she's quite weak, so you'll have to rely on her ability to interrupt enemies before you can hit them back. To get Jynx early, just fish in Poliwhirl using Super Rod and then trade to Cerulean City.

After defeating Team Rocket in Celadon City and going through Lavender Town, get the Super Rod from the NPC on Route 12.
Use the Super Rod to fish the Poliwhirl on Route 6.

Nidoking: The Early-To-Late Game Powerhouse

Nidoking is one of the most powerful Pokemon Fire red and leaf green. You can catch Nidoran very early in Route 3, and if you evolve it into Nidoking, it will have access to a wide range of moves. Notably, Nidoking can learn Earthquake, Poison and Rock Slide, making it an extremely effective offensive powerhouse. Earthquake is its most powerful attack, capable of sweeping through many enemies.

Since you get Nidoran so early, Nidoking becomes a great option against Gym Leaders like Koga and Blaine, while still being useful against Erika in the early game and the Elite Four later. It's worth noting that it does detect earthquakes after a while, but it's such a strong move that it doesn't really matter.

How to Get Nidoking Fast in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:

Find a male Nidoran in Route 3 (usually at level 6).
At level 16 evolve a nidoran into a nidorino, then use a moonstone to evolve it into a nidoking.

Nidoran Male only has a 1% chance of appearing in Pokemon Leafgreen in Route 3, as opposed to 14% in FireRed.

Raichu: Quick threat with access to Thunderbolt

Raichu is one of the most reliable electric types Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. While Raichu isn't as heavy as other Pokemon, its speed and access to powerful Electric-type moves like Thunderbolt and Thunder make it a great offensive option. With its high Speed stat, Raichu can hit fast and hard, making it a great choice for taking on Water-types and Flying-types, which are common throughout the game.

Additionally, Raichu has access to several utility moves such as Quick Attack, Iron Tail, and Surf (in some versions), providing a versatile role on your team. It is a reliable choice against Lorelei's Ice-type, Misty's Water-type, and Giovanni's Water-weak Ground-types. Thief can also be an amazing move to use on Raichu, which is better than Jolteon because it learns Thunderbolt through leveling.

How to get Raicu fast in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:

There are options if you really want to pick Bulbasaur or Charmander, in which case I recommend Dodrio in place of Raichu for the former and Vaporen in place of Arcanine for the latter. It's not necessarily optimal, but it's a pretty good setup.
