For a game that opens its demo with the disclaimer 'Incomplete and in active development', Far West It has a funny way of making every other demo feel incomplete by comparison. It has two main inspirations, and its first, of 2018 Deep Rock GalacticCracked the code on co-op shooters by rewarding loops (missions, hubs, construction variety) at each level. Its second, Helldivers 2, proved that the formula had legs, but even though it was unannounced, Far WestFrom Lyon-based Evil Raptor and published by Fireshine Games, the third has spiritual and thematic inspiration – Weird West.
But as an upcoming 1-4 player PVE co-op shooter, Far West It also does its job well with this lineage: robot cowboys, haunted deserts, and spell-slinging in the Wild, Wild West. It knows exactly what it wants to be and what niche it wants to fill in the co-op shooter space, and it's already delivering on its big promise. It's strictly an indie game, but despite being made by a team of seven, Far West This place feels more feature-rich than most finished games, and the demo proves it.
The Far Far West captures the best qualities of its inspiration
now, Weird WestIn this regard, 2023 isn't really a video game, at least not any more than the actual genre of the Weird Western. I like it a lot Far WestThe game falls within the Weird Western genre, drawing on Western settings with elements of fantasy, horror, and science fiction. When it comes to gameplay, though, the Deep Rock Galactic and Hell Diver 2 A comparison that is self-proclaimed Far WestHold the social network page.

That said, it's important to talk shop about the presentation and mechanics, and the hub town Far West At its visually delightful (if mechanical) heart. It's full of lively, detailed, robotic townsfolk and animals to interact with, vendors that act as a robotlike system, a mini-game of darts, a saloon, a sheriff, a shooting range, and a collectibles area. An active dev presence is felt here as well, with two or three characters in the hub literally linking players to Discord, feedback forms, and Steam reviews.
While in the field, the mission areas that serve as the core setting for this indie shooter's excellent gameplay loop are detailed and feature plenty of optional objectives. The initial area design can be repetitive, but only three unlockable areas in the demo show real variety, with a fourth hidden outside the mission map. Although unavailable in the current demo (naturally), the team at Evil Raptor has also done some festive events with seasonally customized maps.
Solid audio and video
In terms of pure presentation, Far West Can actually live close Sea of Thieves than its other main motivation, Deep Rock Galactic – Vivid, saturated, with skeletons everywhere. It's nothing to reinvent the wheel, but it doesn't need to be; Enemies are readable at a glance, and the visual damage indicators are neat, which is more important than it looks in a chaotic co-op shooter where four players are simultaneously swapping spells and sidearms. Sound design is one area that doesn't keep pace, as the Western twang fits the setting well, it lacks the punchiness or specificity that would make it memorable from functional.
Far Far West's gameplay is where it really sets itself apart
When it comes to real moment-to-moment gameplay, Far West Stands tall with very solid sportsmanship. The first thing players will notice is the lack of a sprint option, but horse players are fast and feel great to ride, and chaining jumps and dashes are really fun. Speed and jump height can also be upgraded along with health, ammo, and spell cooldowns, so there's a real sense of progression in movement. There's a sense of early Unity engine fluency worth acknowledging; It takes some getting used to, but it's easy to adapt, and fluidity and responsiveness are a well-built trade-off.
As a game of guns and spells, combat layers elegantly on top of movement, sidearms always have elemental effects (revolvers, bows, dual revolvers, or ninja stars), and primaries (shotguns, miniguns, snipers, rifles) have their own unique punch. There's enough variety here to generate real build variety and serious longevity, even before spells come into play. Spell options consist of four elements, each with five levels, and they feel about as satisfying as slinging. AcceptedWhich, for a seven-person indie studio, is pretty high praise.
A quirk with Far WestThe gameplay is that, much like Hell Diver 2Must slogged through lower-level difficulties; The problem is that the easy way is too easy, the normal too easy.
Boss Design keeps things fresh
each Far WestBounties ends with one of several boss encounters, and thankfully, there aren't any glitches here. The tutorial's skull-with-wings set the tone with bullet-hell chaos, but the ghost train players will encounter in later missions is meaningfully unique, feeling more like an aerial encounter. These bounties and bosses are random, it seems, which means all is well for encounters with enough variety that each feels like its own event.
Far West knows exactly what it is
finally, Far West A pre-release also succeeds because it seems to have a solid understanding of what it should be. It's easy to understand and appealing to the senses, it's got meaningful gameplay without ever feeling bloated, and it's clearly built by people who love the genre. It's a winning recipe that's still overlooked these days, but it definitely works here.
Far West There's a planned release window for Q2 2026, but for now, the game has a demo on Steam that's free and feature-forward. The demo has already overdelivered, and it's clear that the foundation is there in spades for whatever comes next. If Deep Rock GalacticCo-op loop of and Weird WestIf magic-cowboy energy is your thing, Far West It's on your wish list.
