We've been getting a lot of God's War news lately. Another game from Santa Monica is reportedly a spin-off focusing on the Fae, and BluePoint's canceled live-action game may have featured Atreus in the Greek underworld. However, the biggest piece of news was that we got our first look at Kratos and Atreus in Amazon's live action God of War TV show. Unfortunately, it wasn't good.
At first glance, many fans thought it was an AI-generated image due to the overall lighting and positioning of the shot. Things only got worse when it was confirmed by Prime Video to be the actual teaser image, with fans unable to get over Ryan Hirst's father-bod playing Kratos. Surprisingly, God of War producer, David Jaffe, said he thought the show would be good, but wondered who approved the image.
David Jaffe is confident about Amazon's God of War series
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffe couldn't help but laugh at the photo. “Two things could be true. It could be a terrible image, and it is. It's very bad in a lot of ways, which we'll talk about in a moment. Ron Moore is amazing, who's the showrunner,” he said. “He's done the Star Trek stuff. That guy is a juggernaut of a genius. I have absolutely no doubt it's going to be a great show. Corey's on it. I think Corey's great at telling the story, not just the universe. I'm not worried about the show.”
But what Jeff is concerned about is Amazon choosing this particular image. While he didn't care that Hearst didn't look exactly like Kratos, he said he didn't care what it looked like, as long as the actor could embody the essence of the character.
“It's just a dumb f**ing image” he added. He suggested that perhaps the idea was to showcase the father-son dynamic rather than Kratos' strength and rage, “But at that point, can you find a picture that doesn't look like he's sitting in a forest? Because it looks like a picture.”
Coming to Atreus, Jaffe said, “You know, he looks and I know he's got to be a little kid. But is this the kind of little kid who needs glasses? Is he a little kid or maybe a little special? Because look at how he's holding the bow and where he's holding the bow. Like, it's not like he's looking perfectly. She also mentioned how fake his back rock looks.
“I'm sure the show will be fine, mainly because Ron Moore is a really good creator and showrunner, and Cory is involved,” he concluded. Not before taking a final swipe at the image, whoever approves it needs to be “on some sort of list”.
