Pokemon fans are turning to FireRed and LeafGreen now that the remakes of the original games are finally available on the Nintendo Switch. However, it only took a few days for some of those fans to discover that if you press all of the Switch's face buttons at the same time while playing Pokemon ports, you'll be taken back to the title screen.
Press all four face buttons while playing FireRed and LeafGreen
That's right, if you press the A, B, X, and Y buttons at the same time while playing FireRed or LeafGreen, the game will reset. No warnings, no pop-ups asking if you're sure – it just happens. Streamer Savannah Bananaz found this out the hard way, revealing on Sunday that she lost 90 minutes of progress due to button mashing while grinding.
She was also streaming at the time, meaning she captured the heartbreaking moment live on camera. Sharing the footage, the streamer urged others not to be like him and save your game regularly, especially if you have a habit of carelessly tapping on buttons.
Savanana Bananaz isn't the only person to foul up the Pokemon port's button-press reset mechanic. As this Reddit thread shows there are some of you, some of whom have lost more than 90 minutes of their FireRed and LeafGreen playthroughs. One user claimed they saved up to five hours when they pressed all four face buttons at the same time, unaware of what they were about to lose.
Some of you are going to love this secret reset feature
It's a strange feature, and one that has proven incredibly annoying for early adopters of ports during their launch weekend. However, in the long run, if you remember to save regularly, it's probably going to be some of you who plan to spend a lot of time on these games.
This feature is incredibly useful for glare hunters, for example. If you don't encounter the shiny version of the Pokemon you're looking for, or if you accidentally knock it unconscious, quickly press the four face buttons to take you back to the title screen. Make sure you save beforehand so you can try again, and again, and as often as it seems you'll get the desired result without completely exiting the game to restart.
If you've been enjoying revisiting old games, or you're a young fan playing through them for the first time, good news – it looks like there may be more to come. A datamine of ports has revealed files suggesting that Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald could follow in the footsteps of FireRed and LeafGreen. Just like Pokemon, Nintendo, and Datamines for that matter, don't think we're getting those ports until Game Freak confirms it.
