Resident Evil Requiem Easy-to-Miss Detail Explains Why FBI Sent Grace Alone

In Resident Evil Requiem it was very strange that Grace Ashcroft, an FBI data analyst with zero field experience, was sent to Rainwood – the place where her mother died – without backup. That's the only reason he has a gun he bought one.

You're not alone in thinking that his boss, Dempsey, must have something, and that he was somehow in on it, but the story never opens up to that idea. It then ends with Grace returning to the office to write a report for him. So, what gives?

Well, it turns out, there's an easily-missed detail on one of the ARK monitors that reveals Victor Gideon planned the whole thing, to exploit “related parties” to send Grace alone to the hotel.

Victor Gideon lays out a wicked flowchart to recall his master plan *check notes*, bringing grace to the police station.

When you finally reach the archives in the underground Raccoon City laboratory, your instinct is likely to rush and interact with the giant monitor, but if you look closely, you will see a convenient flowchart open that details how Victor Gideon organized the events of the game..

Yes, even if you look at it, it's so blurry that it's hard to understand what it says. But zoom in a little, and you'll see that Victor Gideon – or connections – have some influence in the Bureau, indicating that the plan is to “pressure relevant parties to hand over the investigation to the FBI” and “make sure Grace Ashcroft is prosecuted.”

The flowchart otherwise details what happens in the game: “Free Grace Ashcroft,” “Conduct the relevant tests to match the key,” “Bring the key to the RPD,” “Bring her to the ARK,” “Release ELPIS.”

Dempsey was not an incompetent boss who threw an inexperienced agent into the field and then left him in the hands of his captors. He was corrupt. Unfortunately, the game never quite addresses this, and while I'd love for a sequel to unpack the connections and their implications, this is Resident Evil we're talking about.

The original games repeatedly tease that we'll eventually take the fight to the umbrella, only for it to go bankrupt off-screen, so I doubt we'll see Dempsey face justice anytime soon. But who knows? Maybe the DLC will surprise us.
