Valve is facing yet another issue

Recent weeks have seen several lawsuits filed against them valveThe latest comes from the UK's Performance Rights Society, the legal entity responsible for digital gaming distribution platform Steam.

In late February, New York Attorney General Leticia James filed a lawsuit against Valve over its loot box system, alleging that Valve promotes illegal gambling marketed toward children. She claims that the difference in commodity prices, as well as the revenue generation from loot boxes, is a “great gamble” and seeks compensation for those who purchase loot boxes in Valve's games. Similarly, a few days ago, the Hagens Berman law firm filed a consumer lawsuit against Valve in the UD District Court for the Western District of Washington over loot boxes appearing in games. Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2. The lawsuit seeks the same damages and remedies as the New York Attorney General.

However, this third lawsuit against Valve has nothing to do with loot boxes, as reported by Gamesindustry.biz. In the United Kingdom, the Performing Rights Society (PRS), an organization that manages and protects the rights of songwriters, composers, and music publishers (a la licensing, royalty collection, royalty distribution, and copyright protection), has launched “legal proceedings” against Valve. PRS claims that Valve has distributed games on Steam that use its members' work “without permission.”

Valve has claimed that high-profile and popular games such as Valve have not obtained licenses for the use of rights managed by PRS on behalf of its members. Grand Theft AutoForza Horizonand FIFA/EA FC. These legal actions comply with section 20 of the UK's Copyright, Designs, and Patents Act 1988, according to PRS, after the organization attempted to work with Valve regarding licensing concerns. According to the organization,

“The lawsuit will continue until Valve Corporation positively engages in discussions and obtains the necessary licenses retroactively and prospectively to use the PRS repository.”

Dan Gopal, PRS chief commercial officer for music, said that members of the organization create music that enhances the experience of the games offered by Steam, and that songwriters and creators “deserve to be recognized and properly valued for their contributions.” He also referred to these legal processes as a “duty to act” but not a step taken lightly.

As of this writing, Valve has not officially responded to the lawsuit filed by PRS or the Hagens Berman law firm, but the company did respond to the lawsuit filed by the New York Attorney General.

In short, Valve claimed that its lootboxes were identical Pokemon card, Magic: The Gathering cards, baseball cards, and more recent trends such as Labubu as a means of defense. Valve also says that it has worked with the New York Attorney General and, citing its investigation into the promotion of gambling through Steam, “attempts to terminate accounts that used Valve game items on gambling sites in violation of the Steam Customer Agreement for several years.”
