Super Mario Bros
Chaos in the Mushroom Kingdom
Super Mario Bros Was a system vendor for the NES in 1985. It was one of the most mind-blowing video games anyone could wrap their head around in the 80s. To say this game is responsible for the rebirth of video games and the home console market would not be a stretch. Mario is now ubiquitous in the video game industry, so much so that non-gamers know who he is. As important as it is Super Mario Bros Yes, the NES version is hard to go back to.
Mario is very rigid as a character, which makes it difficult to stop on a dime and cross platforms accurately. Also, most levels are designed to kill players with improperly placed off-screen enemies. SNES remake in 1993 Super Mario All-Stars Collecting alleviates some of these stressful mechanics, but it's also difficult. Super Mario Bros Not playable by any means today, but it's far from the first Mario game any fan would recommend today.

Star Fox It was one of the most groundbreaking games on the SNES, graphically, showcasing the power of Mode 7. Polygonal models gave off a 3D vibe, which was a nice trick to fake perspective, but these days, it just looks like triangles and other shapes shot at each other.
Also, as a flight-based shooter, the controls aren't designed well enough to fit comfortably on the SNES controller. Perhaps with mods and emulation, there could be a great build online that uses flying sticks for an incredible experience. That sometimes sounds like a headache to set up Star Fox 64 A very good game that is easily accessible on hold and switch.
Pokemon Red and Blue
Prepare for trouble, and double it
Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue Game Boy can be thanked for starting the revolution. Without them, the Pokemon The franchise wouldn't exist, and thirty years later, it's still thriving. Although the games are still incredible for what they do, with all-time great campaigns and an almost perfectly balanced Pokemon roster, few things stop it from progressing in the franchise.
8 Almost the Best FPS Games Nobody Remembers
These games aren't Halo, but they're still memorable for the near-perfect FPS gameplay they gave us.
Movement between areas is slow, as are Pokemon battles, which take forever to play. EXP sharing is extremely limited, which also makes the game a huge grind. There are better ways to experience these campaigns, such as remakes, Pokemon FireRed and Pokemon Leaf Greenwhich are available on Switch consoles.
Super Smash Bros
Imagine me and you, and you and me
Super Smash Bros was one of the most amazing crossover games of the 90s. It also had an addictive TV commercial that played all the time. All these Nintendo characters gathered together for a fighting game was unheard of at the time. The cast seemed packed at the time, but in retrospect, it's a pretty small play in terms of scope.
The number of characters, stages, and extras is ridiculous even when compared to the GameCube sequel. With modern games, Super Smash Bros. UltimateWhich offers every character released in the franchise, there's no reason to go back to the N64 original other than nostalgia. From gameplay overdrive, controls are never what they used to be.

Mature 17+ // Blood and gore, language, violence
Resident Evil Survival horror didn't start the genre, but it's the game that many cite as having perfected the formula for the genre for all others to follow, and it's celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026. Set in the Spencer mansion, players choose between Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield, who pursue almost identical partners.
What was scary then is less scary now because of the graphics, and the only real fear is the tank controls, which makes it hard to recommend. Besides the controls and graphics, the inventory is also incredibly limited, forcing players to backtrack a lot. With a fantastic GameCube remake and an HD version of that remake with modern controls, there's no reason to go back to the PS1 release. Resident Evil right now
Dragon Warrior 7 (PS1)
Get ready to grind
Dragon Warrior 7 PS1 was the North American name for the original 2001 release, but with the remake, it's called something better. Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. Names aside, the game already looked dated when it launched on the PS1, seeming like a better version of the SNES project. That said, the game was very enjoyable, and while it was simple in design, the combat was as solid as ever. Dragon Quest Entry.
10 Almost Perfect JRPGs, Ranked
A little tweak here and there, and there's no doubt these JRPGs could turn into serious GOTY contenders.
In 2001 players had to be very patient as there was little hand holding to guide them, the start was incredibly slow, and the grind to level up was extreme. Patient players got over it, but today there are two good remakes, one on 3DS and the other on multiple platforms like Switch 2 and PS5, there's no reason to play the PS1 original except to see how much the remakes improved everything.
Duke Nukem 3D
The king has a date
The 90s was when first-person shooters began to evolve and flourish Wolfenstein 3D who doom. Both of those shooters hold up in their own ways, though Duke Nukem 3D Doesn't, although sprite-based 3D models still look great.
Humor has not aged well. It's incredibly cheesy and delivered so seriously that it can be grating. The level design isn't perfect either, leaving players scratching their heads while exploring and trying to figure out what to do next. It's not exactly a helloA similar experience in terms of providing visceral feedback from gunplay. Like many parody films of the 90s, Duke Nukem 3D Best left in a time capsule. That said, the 2016 remaster does a good job of making it playable, but other issues remain.
Tomb Raider
A swing and a miss
tomb raider, One of the most celebrated on the PS1, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026. Players loved the freedom it offered to explore tombs and caves as Lara Croft, who was a surprise hit with male players in the 90s. like Resident EvilIt also suffers from clunky tank controls, but it's worse because there's platforming involved.
Missing a perfect jump by a fraction and dying was frustrating in 1996 and even worse today. Now there are better ways to experience this original game, from Tomb Raider: Anniversary For the upcoming Tomb Raider: Legacy of AtlantisWhich is a complete remake.
