An employee at a Pokemon center in Tokyo has died after being stabbed

An employee of a Pokémon center has reportedly died after being attacked by assailants on his way to work. The terrifying scene reportedly scared customers at the Pokemon Center, prompting emergency services to be inundated with calls for help.

Although violent crime is extremely uncommon in Japan, unfortunately, the game industry has been plagued by threats and actual violence in the past. For example, in 2024, Nintendo canceled an event after threats of violence were made against its employees and attendees, while individual developers have been verbally abused and received death threats in the past, to the point that the developers had to issue an official statement calling for an end to the harassment.

In Japan on March 26, around 7 p.m., calls to 110 (the Japanese equivalent of America's 911) began coming in, reporting a knife attack by a man at a shopping center in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. While initial reports made it sound like the attack spread throughout the shopping center, the crime did not actually spread beyond the Pokemon Center. Eyewitness accounts and surveillance footage indicate that a man in his 20s entered the Pokemon Center in the Sunshine City building armed with two knives. He headed straight for the counter, where a female employee who was reportedly in her 20s was standing doing her job. After reaching her, he allegedly stabbed her in the neck with a knife. After attacking her, he used a knife on himself. Both of them were taken to the hospital in critical condition but did not survive the incident.

Currently, it is unclear what the motive was behind the attack, and police have not released information on whether the two know each other. At this time, no names or additional information about who the individuals were has been shared. However, despite the general panic indicated by the emergency calls, the attacker did not take any action in the store or anyone else nearby, so it appears to be a deliberate, targeted attack. More information will likely be released in the coming days. Meanwhile, the Ikebukuro Pokemon Center itself has released an official press release, noting that the store will be temporarily closed to facilitate ongoing investigations, but to ensure the mental health of its employees. No date has been given for when the store will open, so fans are encouraged to stay tuned for more updates.

One can imagine that this must have been an extremely terrifying experience for all involved. It's spring break for most students in Japan right now, so there's a good chance there were kids in the store when the attack happened. No doubt the store will open as soon as possible, but the impact of this experience can be lasting on those present during the attack.

While it is unlikely that the attack was triggered by anything to do with it Pokemon In itself, this is unfortunately not the first time that a violent crime has broken out around the chain. Many incidents have happened Pokemon Go Players are heating up in Japan, leading to real-world attacks. Others have been threatened with violence during robberies Pokemon cards, which are often targeted because of their potentially high value. As such incidents have been recorded in many countries, the violence has not come under control in Japan either. Thankfully, most of these incidents don't go beyond the point of intimidation and minor injury, but it's still pretty annoying to watch.
