What are Variant Mutations and Deviant Mutations in Monster Hunter Stories 3

Of the 17 mutations available in Monster Hunter Stories 3, three are variations of regular monsters, while the other 14 come from endangered species. All of these mutations can be discovered by meeting their requirements while restoring the habitats of the species they mutate from.

All 17 of these monsters are considered mutations, but it is important to understand that there are actually two subcategories of mutations in the game. These subcategories are Variants and Deviants. While the subcategory a monster belongs to is only vaguely stated in the game’s Monsterpedia, it is important to know because it affects whether they will spawn in the wild.

Deviant mutations will not spawn in the wild and can only be found by hatching eggs. In contrast, Variant mutations can be found both in eggs and roaming the habitats they reside in.

There are a few easy ways to tell if a monster is a Deviant or a Variant mutation by looking at its Monsterpedia entry. These differences include the following:

  • Variants will have Ecology Notes while Deviants will not.
  • The short description provided for Deviants will always refer to them as Deviant, while the entries for Variants will call them subspecies.
  • The Anatomy/Parts portion of a Deviant’s Monsterpedia entry will always read No Parts Info, likely because you will never fight them yourself.

How to Get Every Mutation in Monster Hunter Stories 3

Deadeye Yian Garuga

  • Mutates from: Yian Garuga
  • Mutation Requirement 1: Yian Garuga has an Ecosystem Rank of S.
  • Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in a habitat containing 3 or more monsters that are the same rank as the Yian Garuga.
  • Mutation Type: Deviant

The Deadeye Yian Garuga is a deviant version of the Yian Garuga. It is a Speed-Type and Fire-Element Monstie with higher health and attack stats than its regular counterpart. While it has a higher attack, it has nearly half the defense of any regular Yian Garuga.

While the Monsterpedia will not list any weaknesses for the Deadeye Yian Garuga, hatching one and looking at its stats will reveal its weaknesses. These weaknesses may differ depending on whether the monster is a dual-type, as well as what elements it is associated with, so make sure to check them when you hatch a new Deadeye Yian Garuga.

Hellblade Glavenus

  • Mutates from: Glavenus
  • Mutation Requirement 1: Glavenus has an Ecosystem Rank of S.
  • Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in habitats containing 4 or more monsters that have razor-sharp appendages.
  • Mutation Type: Deviant

Monsters that have razor-sharp appendages include Great Izuchis, Magnamalos, Seregios, and Shogun Ceanataurs.

The Hellblade Glavenus is a Fire-Element and Speed-Type monster that is a deviant version of the regular Glavenus. It keeps the Glavenus’ speed while trading its defense stat for more health and attack power. It pushes its attack power to the extreme, filling its attack stat bar in exchange for only having one bar of defense.

Like other Deviant species, you’ll need to hatch a Hellblade Glavenus to view its Elemental weaknesses in-game.

Ivory Lagiacrus

  • Mutates from: Lagiacrus, an endangered species unlocked after defeating the Invasive Plesioth.
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Lagiacrus has an Ecosystem Rank of A.
  • Mutation Type: Variant

The Ivory Lagiacrus is a Thunder-Element Monstie with the Speed attribute. Its best stat is its attack, followed by health, speed, and then defense.

When it comes to ailments, the Ivory Lagiacrus is weak to everything but paralysis, which it is slightly resistant to. It is similarly resistant to Thunder-Element attacks and Water-Element attacks. In contrast, it is very weak to Dragon attacks, slightly weak to Fire attacks, and neither weak nor resistant to non-elemental and Ice attacks.

Soulseer Mizutsune

  • Mutates from: Mizutsune, an endangered species found after defeating the Invasive Shogun Ceanataur.
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Mizutsune’s Ecosystem Rank is S.
  • Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in a habitat containing at least 1 electricity-imbued monster that is a bitter rival of the Mizutsune.
  • Mutation Type: Deviant

The Zinogre monster can be used to meet the second mutation requirement.

While the normal Mizutsune has pretty balanced stats that are almost all equal, the Soulseer Mizutsune has higher attack and health with a lower defensive stat. Additionally, it is a Speed-Type monster instead of being a Technical-type. Despite the differences, it is still a Water-Element Monstie like the normal Mizutsune.

To check the elemental weaknesses of a Soulseer Mizutsune, you’ll need to hatch one and look through its stats. They will change slightly depending on whether it is a dual-element monster and what its secondary element is.

Stygian Zinogre

  • Mutates from: Zinogre, an endangered species found by defeating the Invasive Odogaron.
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Zinogre has an Ecosystem Rank of A.
  • Mutation Type: Variant

The Stygian Zinogre is a Dragon-Element monster that uses Technical-type moves. It is an offensive powerhouse with equal amounts of health and speed. However, it has pretty low defenses to balance out its high attack power.

Stygian Zinogres are weak to all ailments, especially Blastblight and Darkness, in all of their states. Their elemental weaknesses will change depending on whether they are in their normal, Dragon Shroud, or Battle Shroud states. They will always be resistant to Dragon and Fire attacks regardless of their state.

Thunderlord Zinogre

  • Mutates from: Zinogre, an endangered species found by defeating the Invasive Odogaron.
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Zinogre has an Ecosystem Rank of S.
  • Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in a habitat that contains at least 1 rival of Zinogre that has enchanting purple fur.
  • Mutation Type: Deviant

The Mizutsune monster will meet the second requirement.

The Thunderlord Zinogre is a Thunder-Element and Power-type monster that is a deviant version of the Zinogre. It has an extremely high attack stat, good health and speed, and a very low defense stat.

The Thunderlord Zinogre will always be a Thunder-Element Monstie, but it may have a second element, which changes depending on the region its egg is found in. The combination of these two elements will alter its elemental weaknesses, so you’ll need to check them in the Thunderlord Zinogre’s stats menu after hatching one.

Pink Rathian

  • Mutates from: Rathian, an endangered species unlocked by defeating the Invasive Yian Garuga.
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Rathian’s Ecosystem Rank is Rank B.
  • Mutation Type: Variant

Pink Rathians are very similar to regular Rathians when it comes to stats and weaknesses. They are both Fire Element Monsties that use Speed-Type attacks. Additionally, both are weak to all ailments except for Burn and Poison, and both are resistant to Fire Element attacks but weak to Thunder and Dragon attacks.

One of the main differences between Pink Rathians and regular Rathians is that Pink Rathians have a slight resistance against Water-Element attacks and no weaknesses or resistance to Ice attacks. Pink Rathians have also traded some of the Rathian’s defense stats for higher attack and health stats.

Dreadqueen Rathian

  • Mutates from: Rathian, an endangered species unlocked by defeating the Invasive Yian Garuga.
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Rathian’s Ecosystem Rank is Rank S.
  • Mutation Requirement 2: The habitat contains 3 or more poisonous monsters.
  • Mutation Type: Deviant

The Dreadqueen Rathian is a Speed-type and Fire-Element Monstie that is a deviant mutation of the Rathian. It has equally high health and attack stats, relatively high speed, and low defense.

Since the Dreadqueen Rathian is a Deviant Mutation, its Monsterpedia entry will not show any ailment or elemental weaknesses. Instead, you can view the weaknesses of a specific Dreadqueen Rathian after hatching it or while looking through your Monstie collection in the Stables.

Sand Barioth

  • Mutates from: Barioth, an endangered species found after defeating the Invasive Khezu.
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Barioth’s Ecosystem Rank is A.
  • Mutation Type: Variant

The Sand Barioth is a Non-Elemental monster that uses Technical-type attacks. It is slightly resistant to Burn, Poison, and Darkness ailments, but weak to all other ailments. When it comes to Elements, the Sand Barioth is very resistant to Fire, slightly resistant to Dragon, slightly weak to Thunder, and very weak to Ice attacks.

Like many of the other monster mutations, the Sand Barioth trades in part of the regular Barioth’s defenses for higher firepower. However, its health and speed remain the same.

Green Nargacuga

  • Mutates from: Nargacuga, an endangered monster unlocked by defeating the Invasive Nerscylla.
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Nargacuga’s Ecosystem Rank is A.
  • Mutation Type: Variant

The Green Nargacuga is a non-elemental and Speed-type monster. It has slight resistance to the Blastblight, Bleed, and Sleep ailments, but weakness to all other ailments. When it comes to elements, the Green Nargacuga is very weak to Thunder, somewhat weak to Fire, resistant to Ice, very resistant to Water, and neither weak nor resistant to non-elemental and Dragon-type attacks.

This Monstie keeps the same health and high speed as its regular counterpart. Additionally, it has slightly lower defense and slightly higher attack than the regular Nargacuga.

Silverwind Nargacuga

  • Mutates from: Nargacuga, an endangered monster unlocked by defeating the Invasive Nerscylla.
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Nargacuga’s Ecosystem Rank is S.
  • Mutation Requirement 2: The habitat contains 2 or more monsters that control wind.
  • Mutation Type: Deviant

Wind-controlling monsters include Great Izuchi, Legiana, and Paolumu.

Silverwind Nargacugas are non-elemental and Speed-type monsters that are Deviant mutations of regular Nargacugas. They have higher attack and health than both regular and Green Nargacugas, with much lower defense than either.

The Silverwind Nargacuga is a Deviant mutation, so its Monsterpedia entry will not show any ailment or elemental weaknesses. However, you’ll be able to see the Elemental weaknesses of your own Silverwind Nargacuga by looking at its stats in the Stables.

Boltreaver Astalos

  • Mutates from: Astalos, an endangered Monstie hidden behind the Invasive Seregios.
  • Mutation Requirement 1: Astalos Ecosystem Rank is S.
  • Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in a thunder elemental area with 3 or more thunder elemental monsters.
  • Mutation Type: Deviant

The Boltreaver Astalos is a Technical-type Monstie that uses the Thunder Element. It is a Deviant version of the Astalos and has higher attack and health stats than its counterpart. Like most mutations, it has a much lower defense stat than the Astalos does.

As a Deviant, the Boltreaver Astalos will have question marks in the part of its Monsterpedia entry dedicated to Ailment Resistances and Elemental Resistances. Players will instead need to view the specific stats of their hatched Boltreaver Astalos in the Stables to view its personal elemental weaknesses.

Azure Rathalos

  • Mutates from: Rathalos
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Rathalos’ Ecosystem Rank is A.
  • Mutation Type: Variant

The Azure Rathalos is a Power-type subspecies of the Rathalos. Like the Rathalos, it uses the Fire Element. However, it differs from the Rathalos in its slightly higher attack stat and slightly lower defense stat.

The Azure Rathalos is slightly weak to the Paralysis, Sleep, Blastblight, Bleed, and Darkness ailments. In contrast, it is slightly resistant to Poison and Burn. When it comes to elements, it is highly resistant to Fire, slightly resistant to Thunder, slightly weak to Ice, and very weak to Dragon. It is neither weak nor resistant to both Water and non-elemental attacks.

Dreadking Rathalos

  • Mutates from: Rathalos
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Rathalos’ Ecosystem Rank is S.
  • Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in a habitat that contains 4 or more Flying Wyverns.
  • Mutation Type: Deviant

The Dreadking Rathalos is a Fire-Element and Power-type Monstie, just like the Rathalos and the Azure Rathalos. The main difference between the three is that the Dreadking Rathalos has the highest health, highest attack, and lowest defense of all three types of Rathalos. However, they all share the same speed stat.

The Dreadking Rathalos is a Deviant variation of the Rathalos, meaning its Monsterpedia entry will not reveal any of its elemental weaknesses. Instead, players will need to check the elemental weakness of their own Dreadking Rathalos in the Stables.

Brute Tigrex

  • Mutates from: Tigrex, the endangered monster hidden behind the Invasive Diablos.
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Tigrex’s Ecosystem Rank is A.
  • Mutation Type: Variant

The Brute Tigrex is a Variant mutation of the endangered Tigrex monster. It is a non-elemental and Power-type monster with a higher attack stat and a lower defense stat than the regular Tigrex.

The Brute Tigrex is resistant to the Burn, Sleep, and Bleed ailments. However, it is weak to Poison and Blastblight, and very weak to Paralysis and Darkness. It also has a low elemental resistance to Ice, a high elemental resistance to Fire, a low weakness to Thunder, a high weakness to Water, and no resistance or weakness to non-elemental and Dragon attacks.

Grimclaw Tigrex

  • Mutates from: Tigrex, the endangered monster hidden behind the Invasive Diablos.
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Tigrex’s Ecosystem Rank is S.
  • Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in a habitat that contains 4 or more Power-Type monsters.
  • Mutation Type: Deviant

The Grimclaw Tigrex is the Deviant version of the Tigrex in Monster Hunter Stories 3. It is a non-elemental and Speed-type monster with a maxed-out attack stat, equally high health and speed stats, and only a small bit of defense. Like many deviants, it is the glass cannon version of the regular Tigrex monster.

Depending on where your Grimclaw Tigrex is raised, it may be dual-elemental and have unique elemental resistances. When you hatch a Grimclaw Tigrex, scroll through its stats to see its personal elemental resistances.

Bloodbath Diablos

  • Mutates from: Diablos
  • Mutation Requirement 1: The Diablos or Black Diablos’ Ecosystem Rank is S.
  • Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in Tarkuan’s Bountiful Dunes region when it contains Diablos or Black Diablos’ habitats.
  • Mutation Type: Deviant

The Bloodbath Diablos is a Speed-type, Deviant mutation of the non-elemental Diablos monster. It has much higher attack and health stats than the Diablos and Black Diablos monsters, with its attack being maximum and its health being nearly maxed out. Its speed remains the same, while its defense is less than half of the other Diablos monsters’ defenses.

As a Deviant, players will be able to see their specific Bloodbath Diablos’ Elemental resistances by looking at its stats in the Stables.
