The true ending of Hades 2 is changed because the myths are “told and retold”.

While Hades 2 managed to top the first game in almost every aspect, fans weren't too happy with its actual ending. It stops paying to kill time just wasn't done enough. But, in true Supergiant fashion, the devs found a way to change the true ending, giving those of you who've already finished the game a fun way to experience the new ending.

Since time is a major aspect of the game, the devs decided to add a feature that allows Melino to go back and experience the happy ending. Changing the ending of a game can be difficult, but considering the setting and nature of the game, Supergiant was lucky enough to fit in with all the changes made after early access.

Changing the true ending of Hades 2 made complete sense

Melino wins a match against Zagreus and Chronos in Hades 2.

Speaking to GamesRadar+ at the 2026 BAFTA Game Awards, creative director Greg Kasavin said that it was appropriate for the game to change its ending, especially since it is based on Greek mythology. These myths have been told and retold over the centuries, evolving with each new retelling. The same can be applied to Hades 2's story and ending.

“We followed the same process that we had, essentially, which was to consider what we could do, consider the feedback, ask ourselves, 'Are there ways to address this feedback that can improve the experience for unhappy people without making it worse for happy people?'” Kasavin said.

Zagreus and Melinoe reunite at the end of Hades 2.

I don't know how to feel about the ending of Hades 2

Supergiant doesn't quite stick the landing when it comes to killing time in Hades 2.

Supergiant wanted to make sure it addressed players' concerns, but at the same time “save the soul” and stay true to the core idea of the game. The new ending was made not only by incorporating a new feature, but on a more meta level, where the myth would change over the years with each retelling.

“There's something about the story that seems immutable, right? It's like, you can change the balance or whatever, but you can't change the story,” he added. But since the game has been changing and adjusting things since early access, the devs really followed the same principle.

Melinoe, Meg, and Dusa do their nails together in Hades 2.

Kasvin noted that myths have been retold and developed in the past, the same can be said for Hades 2's ending. “Mythology, by its nature, is told and retold. There are retellings of things. I try to think again, how were these classic myths from thousands of years ago, how were they distributed? They knew you, they were distributed. Storytellers.” And, if things start to get a little stale, “Maybe we can make things a little better in the next retelling of it.”

It seems the team really thought this through, with Kasvin having another reason to back up the ending change. “And it's a game about time, and about second chances, and all kinds of different things,” he added. “So, I think we found a way to integrate the adjustments, the actual ending updates in a way that feels like it's part of the same story.”
