Sony has confirmed at its annual corporate strategy meeting that it has not decided on a launch time for the PlayStation 6 due to the impact of rising memory costs affecting the next-generation console.
Today, Sony held its annual corporate strategy and earnings call, as well as shared a financial report for investors. While many of the details are more business-oriented, it has resulted in a ton of news on PlayStation's plans, as well as how its hardware, developers and games have performed over the past year.
Of course, the big question on everyone's mind when it comes to PlayStation is the status of its next-generation console, the PlayStation 6. For a long time, most everyone has agreed that it's too early to jump to the next generation, and it looks like we may get that wish because of the impact of rising memory costs.
Sony has not decided when the PlayStation 6 will be released
It is meanwhile looking at new business models and products
As reported by VGC , Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki was asked in a Q&A session after sharing the company's financial results about how the higher price of memory might affect the PS6. Totoki said the rising cost of memory will also increase the cost of materials and production bill. Sony has plenty of content for the rest of 2026, though.

PlayStation's new policy is further ensuring that you don't own any of the games you buy.
Sony seems to have introduced a new policy that will change the way we play digital games.
Totoki then responded to comments about the PS6 and confirmed that the console's release date and cost have not been officially decided, due to the fluctuating cost of components. The president noted that memory prices are expected to rise in the 2027 fiscal year, which means it has to figure out what to do.
With that being said, Totoki suggests that Sony is looking at other business models and products, which supports the theory that the company is looking to release some kind of handheld. Either way, though, it looks like the PS6 might not be released in 2027, which many of us thought would be seven years after the release of the PS5.
