Sony The PlayStation 5 is facing a brand new issue linked to the console's recent price hike and changes to US tariffs. Sony alleges it is set to collect large sums of money after rolling back the US tariffs, and claims those increased prices should be passed on to consumers.
Tariffs imposed by the Trump administration in the U.S. through 2025 have been largely phased out at this point, with the Supreme Court declaring the IEEPA tariffs unconstitutional. Since then, a method has been offered for companies to file claims to recover tariff costs, which is where this new case against Sony comes into play.

PlayStation Plus received another price increase
Following a major cost increase for Sony's gaming hardware earlier this year, PlayStation announced another PlayStation Plus price hike.
Sony faces new lawsuit over charges
Now, a new class action lawsuit has been filed against Sony, alleging that Sony is receiving “significant consequences caused by unlawful tariffs.” In other words, Sony claims to have raised the price of the PlayStation 5 to compensate for the tariffs, and is now going to receive tariff refunds from the government, but not pass on the extra payments for PlayStation consoles to consumers during that period. If true, that means Sony is making a profit twice, first from the increased cost of the PlayStation 5 family of consoles, and again from the returned fees. The lawsuit claims that all consumers who purchased PlayStation 5 consoles at the increased price after the tariffs were implemented will have to be refunded for the additional cost.

Sony has been the target of several lawsuits in recent years, even before the tariffs were implemented. Sony has faced class action lawsuits over PlayStation Store pricing, controller drift, and it has faced a pre-emptive lawsuit.destiny developer. Some of these have been dismissed, such as the controller drift case, but one case that accused Sony of limiting third-party sales on its platforms, and thereby creating a monopoly, was recently settled. In that particular case, the initial settlement would see Sony pay $7.8 million to those affected.
That being said, the issue is not limited to Sony, or video game and console makers. Nintendo is also facing a tariff lawsuit largely for the same reason, implying that Nintendo must pass the money back from the tariff refunds to its consumers. Amazon, Nike, and Adidas are currently being sued for the same reason, and shipping companies like UPS and FedEx facing legal threats have promised to look into their tariff refunds for affected customers.

At this point, it remains to be seen how Sony will respond to the lawsuit, and whether players will eventually get their money back. The implementation of these tariffs has obviously created a chaotic situation for companies and consumers, and it may take some time for all refunds to be issued to companies that file for them. It also remains unclear how much PlayStation fans can expect to receive if the lawsuit is successful or if Sony promises to refund consumers. Whether Sony freely chooses to refund customers the excess due to the charges or the case is ongoing, it will take some time to resolve the issue for everyone affected.
