Simply put, underdog stories are rare in League of Legends. The top teams in the game have the resources and history to attract the best players, which directly results in a level of dominance that is difficult for contenders to upset.
Top Korean teams have consistently beaten all international competition for more than a decade, except for a few unusual years when Europe and China managed to advance. While Korea remains the top dog internationally, we've also seen domestic dominance from specialized teams in other regions, such as G2 Esports in Europe and BLG in China.
Team WE's performance has been shocking
All in all, League of Legends rarely deviates from the norm outside of a few notable instances. That's why the ongoing comeback story of China's Team WE has captured the hearts and minds of viewers.
The 2026 LPL Split 2 – the second division of China's domestic league – adopted a format where the league's 14 teams were divided into two groups based on their respective performances in Split 1. Team WE managed to get a shout out to the better-performing group, Group Ascend, with their playoff performance in Split 1.
Team We are not considered a strong team in China; In fact, many of their players were not good enough and were released from their previous teams. This is essentially a budget roster, a team of misfits that most people expected to fill a slot in the league.
That was proven. In fact, Team WE looked like one of the worst teams in the LPL. Sure, they were facing China's best teams on a weekly basis due to qualifying for the group stage, but the team looked so weak that almost everyone believed that the teams in the next group, Group Nirvana, were just as good.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the team was dead last in the WE Group climb with a 1-13 series win/loss record. That's a 7 percent win rate, their individual game win/loss is 6-27.
However, due to the group climbing, Team WE still qualified for the play-in stage of the playoffs despite their atrocious regular-season performance. To qualify for the playoffs, Team WE will have to defeat Group Nirvana's leading top team LNG Esports.

Fnatic's Razork and Humanoid Talk Communication, Europe's International Chances and Los Ratones
The Fnatic duo is cautiously optimistic about the team's chances of success this year.
In the five-game series, Team WE overcame a huge deficit to pull off a comeback win in the last game, winning 3-2. This redemption story was only the beginning, however, as Team WE were selected by China's undisputed best team, BLG, to be their opponent in the first round of the playoffs.
BLG turned the narrative on its head as they lost 3-1 to Team WE, and in surprisingly impressive fashion too. BLG is considered one of the best League of Legends teams in the world, so this was a huge upset.
Team WE defeated Anyone's Legend 3-0 in the second round to secure a spot in the Upper Bracket Finals, just one series away from qualifying for the International Tournament against Top Esports.
As an organization, Team WE has not qualified for international play since 2017. The team was previously known as World Elite, but ownership changed to 'Team WE' after years of failure.
With that in mind, it's perhaps poetic that the roster threatening to return the organization to the elite includes players that no one would have called elite just a few months ago.
