LegoThe upcoming Rayquaza set will reportedly be much smaller than initial leaks suggested, according to a recent report from a reliable source. Although earlier claims about its overall size are still believed to be accurate, new information suggests that the model may mark another case of a brick-built base dominating a LEGO set's piece count.
Licensed Danish toy manufacturer Pokemon The line is still in the early stages of its run, with its first products originally launching at the tail end of February 2026. However, the theme is already beginning to split between display models and interactive playsets. Underlining that trend, the recently revealed second Lego Pokemon wave focuses on the company's nascent Smart Play platform rather than traditional brick-built models. While fan favorites such as Pikachu and Charizard are featured in both types of sets, popular legends are expected to follow suit soon. One such model, believed to have a four-digit piece count in a large Rayquaza set, has been mentioned in several leaks as early as 2026.

The LEGO Rayquaza set is rumored to include a large Sky Pillar at the expense of Pokemon size
According to a new report from the Brick Tap community, a “huge amount” of the rumored Rayquaza set's 1,083 pieces will reportedly be used to build the Sky Pillar and surrounding clouds, which serve as display stands. The source also reiterated recent leaks about the first LEGO Pokemon Rayquaza set, saying this model will include a Zinnia minifigure with a printed Mega Stone accessory, but will not feature Mega Rayquaza alternate construction. That context changes how earlier leaks can be interpreted. A 1,083-piece count initially made the model sound like a fairly substantial standalone Rayquaza build, but the reported Sky Pillar build suggests that. Pokemon Once the base is taken into account the size itself can be quite normal.
The rumored 72168 Rayquaza won't be the company's first recent set whose performance structure accounts for a significant portion of the build. Earlier this year, the LEGO Icons-series 11389 Project Hail Mary similarly devoted a significant portion of its pieces to the stand needed to present the spacecraft in flight, making the base the central element of the finished model rather than a minor accessory.
Many other recent and upcoming LEGO sets follow a similar design approach. The 42221 NASA Artemis Space Launch System, 72152 Pikachu and Poke Ball, 76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex, 21350 Jaws, and (to a lesser extent) 10331 Kingfisher Bird models all rely on their basic environment, depending on their environment.

LEGO collectors have long branched out into sets with elaborate stands. Some fans see such builds as annoying and frustrating, positing that they can feel like filler when the main model is smaller than expected. Others argue that larger stands can work better, treating them as another opportunity for creative expression. It should soon become clear that the rumored 72168 Rayquaza falls on that spectrum, as the frequently leaked set is expected to launch on August 1.
