For those lucky enough to get tickets, many people will descend on Derby, United Kingdom this weekend for Download Festival, the country's biggest rock music festival. Among those people will likely be a large number of Final Fantasy 14 fans, where Primals first appeared.
To mark the occasion, Final Fantasy 14 has gone all out, designing merch and setting up booths for the game during the show, keen to take advantage of Primals heading to the UK for the first time in a long time. Unfortunately, some of the illustrations and merchandise made for downloads are a bit overshadowed for many people due to what the merchandise actually looks like.
Final Fantasy 14's download merch is being labeled as AI-generated
Square Enix has posted a number of illustrations on social media over the past few weeks, depicting various Scones such as Yashtola, Estinien, and Elisai dressed in punk outfits. They look very beautiful, but almost immediately, they are landed on and closely analyzed as some believe that AI was used to create them.
Ystola's picture is the hottest, thanks to her mismatched ears, black lines on her chest and her missing tail. Another illustration of some Moogles rocking out on a stage has also been the target of much scrutiny, with many suggesting that the humans in the crowd display AI-generated hallmarks.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's commercial comeback story continues with a strong Switch 2 launch
Solid numbers for Square Enix's second installment in this ongoing saga.
While it's disappointing to see major publishers using AI-generated artwork in any capacity, the biggest problem with this is that Yshtola and Moogle designs are both being sold on downloadable t-shirts, suggesting that Square Enix is selling AI-generated goods without notifying its customers.
Now, it's worth pointing out that no one can actually prove that these are AI-generated. Square Enix's unwillingness to credit any actual artists, a rather lackluster trailer for the download with the same art style, and the reported use of AI upscaling in some of the recent Kingdom Hearts box art don't seem to clear this up.
Unfortunately, we won't get an answer before the download actually starts, and the Final Fantasy 14 booth selling these shirts is actually running at the moment. So, if you're going to see The Primals tomorrow and have any reservations about these shorts and whether or not they're AI-generated, it's probably best to steer clear and grab yourself something else.
