Here's every Commander deck from Marvel Super Heroes, from worst to best

Four new ones Magic: The Gathering The Commander Prokon decks have arrived in Marvel Super Heroes, and while I initially ranked all the face commanders in the Marvel set with confidence, now that the deck lists are out, the dynamic has completely changed.

While I stand by individual Commander rankings based on what they are most likely to build using card abilities and mechanics, as Prakon decks go, there are clear winners and losers from this set.

What was shaping up to be the most competitive deck, has become the worst of the four despite the high reprint value, and typically four decks separated by a large power gap. So, let me take you through each deck and where they rank now that we have full deck lists.

Destruction prevails

Strong leaders, but an inconsistent creature list

Doctor Doom, King of Latveria MTG Cards.

Despite an arguably stronger face and backup Commander duo, the Doom Prevails deck is easily the worst in Marvel Super Heroes, completely let down by a staggering creature list.

Doctor Doom relies heavily on the Connive mechanic, and while it's prevalent in the creature list, it otherwise feels incredibly disjointed, with each of the villain cards having their own alternate agenda.

Doom Prevails has the highest reprint value of the four Marvel Super Heroes Commander Precons.

That's not to say the deck isn't powerful when it works, but cards like Loki's Double and Lady Loki's Manifestation focus on copying creatures or creature types, while Madame Hydra focuses on creating villain tokens, and Spider-Man's Superior Foes deals with banished cards from the top of your library.

This deck tries to fit too many strategies and mechanics into a 100-card deck, ultimately to the detriment of Prakon as a whole.

The deck is highly salvageable through upgrades, but ideally, you want to start with a lot more synergy in Commander Precon. That being said, I'm looking forward to the challenge of bringing this deck up to speed against some of the more powerful decks we've seen this year, including all the mysteries of Strixhaven Commander Preakness.

Fantastic Four

Choose a lane

Mister Fantastic MTG Card.

I had my doubts about The Fantastic Four deck long before the deck list was revealed, but that was largely because it took a similar approach to TMNT prequels with a bunch of options to lead the deck, only missing this key ingredient that made TMNT decks work: partner.

Without a partner, the Fantastic Four deck is more about choosing the right commander for your playstyle and praying to draw the right cards at the right time to suit its level of aggression. The Thing and Human Torch are more aggressive commanders, while Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman are more passive.

Partner allows you to select more than one commander for the deck, like in TMNT and some other combinations like Ellie and Joel from Last of Us Secret Lair.

This makes the deck feel like it's split between defense and offense, which you can easily spin as a situational build, but in reality, it requires picking and committing to a lane rather than trying to play both sides of the fence.

I like that it's heavy on sorcerers, which feeds into Commander ability triggers, but only six instants feels like a missed opportunity. Opponents will see where most of your strategy will be made in your first main phase, so they can easily target you with counters and takedowns. The inability to block a lot of this by instantly casting on the stack means you're telegraphing a lot of your moves, which isn't ideal in Commander at all.

This deck also has a ton of ramp, but I'm going to strike it as positive for now, especially given the mana costs to activate Fantastic Four cards' abilities, which can be awkward if you don't draw the lands you need early in the game.

2

Wakanda forever

Artifacts on steroids

T'Challa, Black Panther MTG Card.

Wakanda is always the only deck that hasn't changed positions in this category as the deck lists have been revealed. Based solely on Face Commander, T'Challa, Black Panther, it was obvious what kind of deck this would be, and the deck list just confirmed it.

Heavy on artifacts (and artifact creatures), Wakanda is always going to be an absolute steamroller deck if allowed to build momentum.

This deck also creates Vibranium tokens, an indestructible artifact that can be tapped to create a colorless mana.

It's actually the complete opposite of the Doom Prevails deck in that it's super focused on its core mechanics, and it's hard to make a wrong move since virtually every card has a positive interaction with each other.

There's definitely room for improvement, and I'd argue that you could go lighter on the creatures, take out some of the unnecessary ramp or remove the Monarch mechanic altogether, and instead go with some extra spells or spells to really apply pressure to your opponents.

It's a solid Commander Precon out of the box, but its potential after some tinkering is what excites me the most.

Avengers Assemble

From Zero to Hero

Captain America, Team Leader MTG Card.

I was anything but a fan of the Avengers Assemble Commanders when they were first revealed. They seemed to indicate that a rather basic Tribal deck was going to be on the way, and at least given the situation the format found itself in it was likely to be too aggressive to work with.

However, once I got a look at the deck list, it's safe to say that it is a lot Powerful Commander Precon, and it doesn't need to change a single card to be able to win at your next Friday Night Magic event.

Most of the power in this deck comes from adjusting the cost, making hero creatures cheaper to cast, and coordinating it with the Captain America, Team Leader ability, which gives them alertness and haste until end of turn, while then putting a +1/+1 counter on both the creature and Captain America.

This deck works around colorless cost reduction, meaning you still need to pay color-specific mana costs.

This deck has the ability to get out of control so quickly that the game will be over before you can think of how to stop it. That being said, wipes are weak to board due to its creature-heavy approach, but there are plenty of ways to protect yourself from it, though none of the usual methods like Teferi's Protection are included in the deck and need to be added as an upgrade.

Avengers Assemble went from being the most basic and interesting of the four Marvel Super Hero prequels to easily the best, and it will be interesting to see if the deck's market value adjusts accordingly, or if it stabilizes as the reprint price is slightly lower than the others.
