Starting tomorrow, Grand Theft Auto 5 players on PS4 and Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the expanded and enhanced current-gen version completely free of charge, just in time for the all-new GTA Online heist.
Although we're all sitting around and waiting for any sign of news on GTA 6 as we hit its promised summer marketing campaign, Rockstar still hasn't budged an inch. At least, that's the case with GTA 6, as it's been more than happy to continue with updates to GTA Online and Grand Theft Auto 5.
Earlier today, Rockstar announced that the next big GTA Online heist, The Kurtz Center Heist, is coming this July, proving once and for all that it doesn't plan to sunset the game anytime soon. Rockstar has made a very generous gesture to anyone playing GTA 5 on last-gen consoles, though that wasn't all it announced.
You can upgrade to the current gen version of GTA 5 for free starting tomorrow
I'm getting a sense
In a Rockstar Newswire post detailing the Kortz Center Heist, it was also revealed that anyone who owns the PS4 or digital Xbox One version of GTA 5 will be able to upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X Extended and Enhanced Edition completely free of charge. This is so that players can “experience the best versions of GTA 5 and GTA Online before the launch of Kortz Center Heist”.

GTA 6's second trailer outsold GTA 5, but how many visuals really matter for sales?
Do trailer views directly translate into commercial success? It's complicated.
The free upgrade path goes live tomorrow and will probably always be available going forward. Although we can all joke about getting GTA 5 for the fiftieth time, this is a good move from Rockstar because literally everyone owns GTA 5 in one way or another, and there's no harm in letting players experience the best version for free.
Of course, you can Let's be cool about it and say that PlayStation has recently encouraged PS4 users to make the leap to PS5 for GTA 6, I'm choosing to believe it's more than just a kind gesture.

Once the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy is over, I want to see something new.
