of Ash Ketchum Pokemon The journey was filled with countless challenges, from intense league battles to dangerous encounters with Team Rocket members. Still, he conquered each of them with the help of the many Pokemon he caught and invited them to join his team along the way.
The character's 25-year journey towards becoming a Pokémon Master wouldn't be possible without his best friends. However, not every Pokemon lived up to expectations. Many of Ash Ketchum's Pokemon could have been released sooner, not only because of their poor abilities and poor win-loss records, but also because they were rarely useful during their decades-long journey.

Pokemon anime has been around for a long time. As such, it's worth considering which seasons are the best of the bunch.

Tauros won big once, then was rarely used
Ash Ketchum's adventures in the Kanto region wouldn't be complete without him capturing not just one, but a total of 30 toros. For most of the series, Ash's Toros are seen wandering and stomping across Professor Oak's field, occasionally being summoned to battle. However, it is never made clear which individual bulls were the strongest in the herd, if any really stood out.
While one of Ash's Toros defeated Venusaur in the Orange League and even defeated Fernando's Toros in direct combat, the creature later struggled in more challenging battles, including against Gary Oak's Nidoqueen. Perhaps the best decision Ash could have made was to accept offers from trainers willing to trade him for Toros, allowing at least one to gain more battle experience elsewhere.

The silence was terrifying, but ineffective
Despite Mook's fearsome appearance, it wasn't particularly effective in battle, and the infamous stench emanating from its poke balls was another downside to Ash bringing the creature along. Unfortunately, Mook may have experienced some off-screen development while with Professor Oak, but Ash rarely used it in battles.
Mook's only notable win was against Janet's Bellsprout, whom it defeated with a body slam. Aside from that fight, it was largely sidelined, later reappearing to be affected by the sleeping powder spread by James' Victribell and eventually losing to Gary Oak's scissor after being overwhelmed by Swift.

Torkol had the heart but not enough victory
Among Ash's Fire-type Pokémon, Torkol is often considered the weakest due to its poor battle record. Coupled with its emotional sensitivity and inability to evolve, Torkoal was better off being released, as it struggled to consistently contribute to Ash's team despite its determination and powerful moves.
While Torkol was not useless in one of Ash's gym battles, even with Norman's victory over Slakoth, it later became a punching bag for the two legendary Pokémon, severely damaging its reputation. Unfortunately, there was no comeback from those losses.
7
Gligar needs more than evolution
Like Torkoal, Gligar is an emotionally sensitive Pokemon. It cries frequently, is afraid to fight strong opponents, and often gets frustrated when things don't go its way. Unfortunately, Gligor also had a poor combat record, most notably failing to defeat the fearsome Gliscor who led the pack to the east.
Although Gligor eventually evolved into Gliscor and received significant character development, it still failed to become Ash's most reliable Pokémon, its strong performances only coming after extensive training under McCann, the Air Battle Master. Although Gligor managed to score an impressive victory over Paul's Drapion, it still fell short against strong opponents such as Electivire and Ninjask.

Palpitode rarely won when it mattered most
Despite Palpitode's ferocious and aggressive nature, it rarely fared well in Ash's battles. While it boasted a powerful move set that included Mud Shot, Hydro Pump, Sludge Wave, and Supersonic, Palpitod often struggled to secure decisive victories for Ash, even in battles where it held a clear type advantage.
Like Torkoal, Palpitoad performed well in less important battles, but when the stakes were highest, it rarely proved to be one of Ash's most reliable Pokemon. For example, Palpitode suffered a disappointing loss against Alessa's Emolga and could only draw against Stefan's Zebstrika despite having the type advantage in both matchups.
5
Boldor had great potential but poor results
If Boldore were to evolve into Gigalith, it would become a more powerful and versatile Pokemon, providing greater offensive power and defensive durability in Ash's critical battles. The creature could only evolve into a Gigalith through trade, which ultimately prevented Ash from unlocking its full potential.
Although Boldor scored a decisive victory over Geraldo's Reuniculus with Rock Blast in the second round of the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup, subsequent battles ended largely in defeat, with Boldor being knocked out despite impressive durability. It even lost against Koffing at one point. As a result, many fans came to prefer its pre-evolved form, Roganrola, believing that it was more resourceful and consistently effective in combat.
4
Unfezant had wings but no victory
Unfezant suffered a similar fate to Pidgeotto, as the flying-type Pokémon had more losses than wins in its track record despite evolving through every stage of its evolution. Even after becoming a fully evolved Unfezant, she rarely showed the strength or stability expected of Ash's territorial bird Pokémon.
Unfezant's most notable contribution to Ash's team was his victory over Swanna of Scylla, which earned him a Unova badge. Beyond that feat, however, she struggled to earn more victories for Ash's team, leading many fans to feel that replacing her with a more reliable Pokémon would have been a better decision.
3
Snivy relied heavily on the draw
After repeatedly trying to forcefully capture the grass-type creature, Ash earned Snivy's respect for his skills and pleasant relationship with Pikachu. She proved to be one of the most difficult Pokemon for Ash to deal with, mainly due to her arrogant and selfish personality, which unfortunately didn't translate into much combat effectiveness.
Snivy mainly relies on her Charm ability to immobilize opponents, then follows up with attacks like Vine Whip and Leaf Blade to finish the battle. Once Attract fails, or Snivy faces same-gender opponents like Elesa's Emolga, she is often at a significant disadvantage and likely to end up on the losing side of the game.
2
Oshawott was one of Ash's least reliable initiates
Oshawott is one of the most adorable starter Pokemon in the series, but is often considered one of the weaker Water-type starters in terms of overall battle performance. In almost every battle that Oshawott participates in, he often appears awkward and clumsy, failing to use his skills properly and suffering frequent defeats as a result.
Although Oshawott's battles are entertaining to watch because of his antics, he almost always fails to deliver good results. Failing to defeat Trip's Tranquill, Lenora's Watchog, Chilli's Pansear, and Cheren's Herdier, the losses continued to mount for the adorable water creature.
1
Pidgeotto was outclassed throughout Kanto
Pizzetto was one of Ash's earliest friends Pokemon. The creature accompanied Ash throughout much of his Kanto journey, battling powerful gym leaders, fending off Team Rocket, and serving as his most trusted partners. However, Pidgeotto's battle record is one of the worst in the entire series.
It was rare to see Pidgeotto win a single fight, as many of its opponents were able to take it out with relative ease. From Samurai's Pinsir to Brock's Geodude and Koga's Venomoth, Pidgeotto suffered one defeat after another, struggling to gain meaningful victories during his time on Ash's team.
