Meccha Chameleon is expected to outsell every other game in 2026

Meccha Chameleon has become a next-level hit after its developers confirmed that it sold an astonishing ten million copies in its first three weeks. It's even better than that for the viral indie hit, though, as estimates suggest it could be the best-selling game of 2026.

Meccha Chameleon is estimated to be the best-selling game of the year

Rhys Elliot of Alinea Analytics shared sales data on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox for the first half of the year, and it's estimated that Meccha Chameleon is the most popular game of all time, having sold 12.6 million copies between its release and June 30. At some distance, too, as the runner-up EA Sports FC 26 sold 9.1 million copies.

Another best-selling game actually released this year is further down the list. That honor goes to Resident Evil Requiem, with 7.5 million sold. Forza Horizon 6 is snapping on Leon's heels with an estimated 7.4 million copies, on par with Arc Raiders, which apparently continues to sell well, although its player count is, more gradually, in decline. Slay the Spire 2, among the biggest indie hits of 2026, rounded out the top six with an estimated 7 million copies sold so far.

Despite the warnings, Meccha Chameleon is almost certainly the best-selling game of 2026.

There are some caveats to the Meccha chameleon's success. First and foremost, Alinea's numbers are always just estimates. However, thanks to its track record these things are most of the time, or at least very close, they are reliable estimates. If Alinea says Meccha Chameleon sold over 12 million copies, then it almost certainly sold 12 million copies.

Especially when we know for sure that it has sold a million copies and the excitement surrounding it still hasn't died down.

Another caveat is that there is no Nintendo here. Pokemon Pokopia has been a system seller for the Switch 2, and I imagine if Nintendo's numbers were included in this data, it would rank somewhere in the top six. However, despite its popularity, Pokopia has not even sold nearly 12 million copies.

What makes Meccha Chameleon's massive success all the more impressive, especially when framed in this way, is that it's only available on one of the three platforms from which the data is pulled. Three of the other five games on that list are available on three platforms, Forza is on two, and Slay the Spire 2 is the only other game in that top six that can only be played on Steam.
