TheGamer has been given the opportunity to kick off Riftbound: Vendetta's preview season with the reveal of one of the set's champion unit cards: Jayce, Brilliant Inventor.
We know from previous leaks that Jayce is a Mind/Body Legend (a unique combination), and the following reveal is for Jayce's Mind (Blue) champion unit card. The card (modeled after Jace's look in Arcane) also has an alternate version, which is a close-up of his Zenith Games skin from League of Legends.
A man of progress
Jayce, Brilliant Inventor is a 6 Energy + 1 Blue Power card that reads, “When you play me, or the first time you play non-token gear each turn, you can prepare something other than me that is exhausted.”
While relatively expensive, readability nothing at all Playing Jace or Gear is very versatile. You can prepare powerful gear like a tired unit, or Vanguard Armory (in a non-Jace blue deck, since he's blue/orange).
I think more obvious combinations/uses of this card are waiting to be revealed in Vendetta. Jace seems to be designed around the fact that gear stays on the board indefinitely — expect to see gear tapping and retooling combos to maximize value in Jace decks.
Of course, we also received a Jayce Champion unit in Spiritforged, which will also be eligible for use as a champion of choice in a Jayce deck. This card, Jace, Man of Progress, allows you to kill one of your gears to play a bigger gear. It is often used in Control Lux decks to cheat Vanguard Armory in early turn.
Both the physical (orange) version of Jayce and his Champion Legend have yet to be revealed, but an earlier leak suggests that you'll be able to choose one of three bonus effects when the card is ready, which will naturally coordinate with Jayce, the Brilliant Inventor.
Champion Legend's card text is sure to be the key to unlocking the power of Jayce's champion units, but we won't know the details of these interactions until the card is revealed.
Vendetta's preview season is set to continue until July 18, with a worldwide release on July 31.
