Genjutsu is one of the three major ninja arts in the world Narutowas officially introduced in Chapter 6 Naruto On November 8, 1999, in Shuisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #48. Genjutsu, known as a special hypnotic and illusionary art, became one of the most valuable possessions a ninja could hold in the latter part of the story. Despite the many powerful genjutsu users that existed in Naruto's world, few were as skilled as Itachi Uchiha. In fact, Itachi could easily be called the God of Genjutsu Naruto series.
However, in Boruto Yuga, the new God of Genjutsu has been crowned, and it's none other than Itachi's younger brother Sasuke, who is now the most powerful user of illusionary techniques in the franchise.
Itachi Uchiha emerged as the best genjutsu user in the Naruto series
Itachi was an anomaly when it came to powerful Uchiha. Ever since he awakened the Sharingan, Itachi was a genius, so much so that even powerful sannin like Orochimaru desired his abilities before he left Konoha and matured as a shinobi. As shown in a flashback to Naruto chapter 590 released on July 9, 2012 in Shuisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump issue #30 due to Shisui Uchiha's death, Itachi's genjutsu powers were taken to the next level.
“I tried using my Mangekyo Sharingan to use Kotoamatsukami, but Danzo stole my eyes. He doesn't trust me. You, my best friend, are the only one I can trust. Protect the Uchiha name and the village.” — Shisui Uchiha leads to Itachi's Mangekyo Awakening, Naruto Chapter #590
With the awakening of his Mangekyo, Itachi Uchiha was granted two unique powers. The first was Amaterasu – the ability to produce impenetrable black flames, and the second was Tsukuyomi. To this date, Itachi's Tsukuyomi is one of the most powerful genjutsu seen in the Naruto franchise. With this ability, he could place his enemies in a Genjutsu world where he controlled space and time. In other words, just one second spent in Tsukuyomi was enough for Itachi to torture someone for eternity. It is the only Genjutsu in the series that can officially kill anyone other than Infinite Tsukuyomi, a stronger version of the technique.
Orochimaru: It can't be! I'm caught in a Kanashibari genjutsu. What great eyesight. It's fantastic.
Itachi: Orochimaru, all your jutsu are ineffective before these eyes.

Itachi also possessed other powerful paralysis genjutsu, such as the technique with which he defeated Orochimaru in Naruto chapter #345, released on March 26, 2007. All of these immense Genjutsu feats made Itachi the God of Genjutsu in the world, but in The Fourth Great Ninja, his brother Souichi officially made Itachi the God of Genjutsu as Ninja-Uchi. Awakening the Rinnegan, raising his genjutsu to a level that even Itachi could only dream of.
Boruto officially surpassed Sasuke Uchiha in genjutsu power to Itachi
in Boruto Throughout the ages, Sasuke Uchiha stands tall as the most powerful ninja in the world. At the beginning of Boruto series, Sasuke established himself as Naruto's equal and Otsutsuki-level shinobi. He did this by improving his genjutsu skills along with ninjutsu and taijutsu. In the Fourth Great Ninja War, Sasuke awakens the Rinnegan in Naruto Chapter 673, which was officially released on May 5, 2014 in Suisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump issue #21. Upon awakening the Rinnegan, Sasuke's genjutsu prowess was taken to a whole new level, and this was first demonstrated when he faced the effects of the Eternal Tsukuyomi with his Rinnegan. Essentially, none of the genjutsu Itachi has poses a threat to Sasuke since he can easily break them, but more than that, Sasuke's own genjutsu is much stronger.
“He had the tailed beasts under his control! But it was just a look! Naruto, you're the only one I can let go of things now. My time here is running out.” – The Sage of Six Paths shows his surprise at Sasuke's Genjutsu Prowess, Naruto Chapter #692
In Naruto Chapter 692, Sasuke Uchiha uses his Rinnegan to cast a powerful Genjutsu on all nine tailed beasts at once, where they cannot move a muscle. In contrast, Itachi's Mangekyo Sharingan will allow him to control one tailed beast at a time, the strongest of which is Kurama. Sasuke controlled Kurama along with all the other tailed beasts, and also drained their chakra using the Rinnegan. This is a godly genjutsu feat that puts Sasuke in a league of his own when it comes to using illusionary powers.
More than that, Sasuke successfully used Genjutsu on Sakura in Naruto Chapter 693, and she is known to be extremely resistant to Genjutsu. In The Last: Naruto The Movie, officially released in 2014, Sakura was unable to survive the genjutsu that Naruto, a perfect jinchuriki, could not. This shows that Sakura's genjutsu resistance is even greater than that of a perfect jinchuriki. In other words, Sasuke demonstrates his immense abilities surpassing any genjutsu user before him to put him in genjutsu. In the Boruto era, Sasuke's genjutsu powers have matured even more, and he now stands tall in the world as the new God of Genjutsu.
After defeating the Rinnegan, Sasuke must develop his Mangekyo Genjutsu
Unfortunately, Sasuke Uchiha lost his Rinnegan Boruto Chapter 53 on December 20, 2020. Since then, he has lost a significant part of his power. Despite that, Boruto Volume 8 confirms to us that Sasuke gained great power. In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter #5, officially released on December 20, 2023, Sasuke Uchiha is seen fighting toe-to-toe with the code, even fatally wounding him. For reference, the code is even stronger than Jigen, and he has upgraded his skills immensely for Sasuke to deal lethal damage to him even without the Rinnegan being displayed. This suggests that Sasuke's other abilities, such as genjutsu, have also been leveled.
Code: Uchiha, you!!! How dare you catch my eye?
Sasuke: Listen closely, Boruto! There is no way we can win against him now. So run away. Survive by all means and build on the skills I've thrown at you. Then no one can stop you.

After Sasuke's return following the events of the post-Mamushi arc, which officially began on June 18, 2026, there is a significant possibility that his genjutsu abilities will also be upgraded. If Sasuke's Genjutsu is taken to the next level, we can be sure that he will once again stand on top as the God of Genjutsu in the Naruto world. In general, ninja arts such as genjutsu and ninjutsu are also significantly denigrated in this area to some extent. Boruto Chain due to ability to absorb chakra. In the case of Genjutsu, they are largely ignored.
If Boruto: Two Blue Vortexes Wants to solve all problems with the original Boruto Manga, then giving new importance to abilities like Genjutsu and Ninjutsu is extremely important. to do so, Boruto Sasuke needs to regain his strongest genjutsu abilities once again. After the fall of Hidari and his purchase of the Thorn Soul Bulb we will have to wait a few more months before Sasuke officially returns. Upon his return, his new powers will be showcased by writers Mikio Ikemoto and Masashi Kishimoto, and we can't wait to see that.
