Disney is trying to bury its head in the sand like hey hey about the live-action Moana remake, as it's now claiming it's “the number one movie in the world” and “loved by audiences around the world.”
It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Disney has made some controversial and cash-grabbing decisions regarding its movies over the past few years, and easily the worst example of this is its live-action remakes. From The Lion King and Cinderella to The Beauty and the Beast and Dumbo, Disney has been lazily reviving and remaking many of its classic films.
For a while, The Lion King seemed like the most glaring example of Disney's “live-action” remakes, but that all changed with the recent release of Moana, which does literally nothing new and brings back Dwayne Johnson for the exact same role. Unsurprisingly, the reviews have been mostly negative, but Disney is hoping that most people won't pay attention to them at all.
Disney says the Moana remake is “the number one movie in the world,” despite terrible reviews
Put some respect in the name of Minions and monsters
Earlier this week, the official Disney Studios Twitter account shared an advertisement for Moana that claims it is “loved by audiences around the world” and is now “the number one movie in the world.” The original Moana is huge, so it would be easy to believe if it weren't for the terrible critical reviews and reported box office numbers.
As we reported, Moana's reviews are worse than Snow White's panned live-action remake. Early reports from Deadline suggested that its box office results so far have been “disappointing” and are set to land in the “$42M-$46M range”. Meanwhile, the real The number one movie in the world is Minions & Monsters, which has already grossed over $230 million.
It's unclear if Disney is trying to draw more people here to watch and see Moana, but Twitter is having none of it and is actively claiming it is what it is. All the top comments are pointing out poor review scores and box office numbers, leading the post to go viral in the worst possible way and possibly draw more attention to how it's actually doing.
