While excitement levels are high, it seems the console will take some time to bear fruit, as in the GDC State of the Game Industry report, only eight percent of developers suggested they were working on games for the Switch 2.
More developers are working on games for the original Nintendo Switch than for the Switch 2
The State of the Game Industry report, which also found that nearly a third of game devs are now female or non-binary, reported that 20 percent of developers are currently working on games for the original Nintendo Switch, up from 12 percent. Which is working on Nintendo Switch 2.
The report found that PC dominance had increased by 14 percent, with 80 percent of developers saying they were now working on titles for PC. This is attributed to the increase in valve steam deck holders. Along with this, it found that 34 percent of developers are working on games for Xbox titles and 38 percent for PlayStation 5.
Interestingly, those developing games for web browsers are at their highest level in a decade, with 16 percent of developers claiming they are working on projects that will land on the web.
What does this mean for the Nintendo Switch 2?
Now, for Nintendo fans, there is no need to panic. The company is undoubtedly going to have a stellar line-up of first-party games for the console's launch window, and there are several reports that third-party developers are going all-in on the platform.
My Time At Evershine was already confirmed for the platform, Ubisoft is working on “half a dozen” Switch 2 ports of its titles, and Red Dead Redemption 2 and Tekken 8 will also arrive on it. It will be good.
Nintendo Switch 2
The Nintendo Switch 2 is the successor to the Nintendo Switch, scheduled for release in 2025. Confirmed as backwards compatible, it will play physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Full disclosure is penciled in for April 2, 2025.
