A dark quest of Veilguard character survival origins

summary

  • Sold into slavery by Loghain and Howe, the elf survived the ordeal and became a shadow dragon.

  • Lorelei's troubled past is revealed by a codex entry written by Les Harding.

  • Unfortunately, Lorelei may still be destroyed during the events of Veilguard.

Dragon Age: Origins has the kind of irreverent writing familiar to BioWare and contemporary RPG developers – but the biting satire of the original Dragon Age is often mixed with moments of genuine darkness. One of these moments is of course Quest Disturbance in Alienage, where the Warden discovers a human trafficking ring in Alienage in Denerim.

Loghain Mac Tir certainly has redeemable qualities, which is why he's actually quite popular within the Dragon Age fan base. However, the extreme black mark on his character is his complicity in allowing Tevinter to enslave the innocent elves of Denerim. That's one of the charms of Dragon Age – although not every character is a good person. Actually, I'm not sure if any of the friends in Dragon Age 2 are good people… except Bethany, Bethany is too pure for that town.

Lorelei, Shadow Dragon Fence

Lorelei Dragon as the Wellguard

This heinous crime organized by Loghain and his mentor Rendon Howe is referenced in Dragon Age: Velgard through the character Lorelei. Lorelei is the owner of a pawn shop that acts as a front for the Shadow Dragons in Duck Town. He is also a shadow dragon bar, trading items with Rook.

Of course, you can't just chat with NPCs in Dragon Age: The Valeguard so this information is instead taken from the codex entry “Lorelei, Shadow Dragon Fence”. The entry is a note written by Les Harding, describing some of Lorelei's background.

I thought Lorelei might be from Ferelden with the way she calls her assistant “Poop” and how she's a little more interested in news from the south than most people here.

During the Fifth Blight, Terran Logan sold the people of Denerim Alienage into Tevinter slaves to finance his war. Lorelei was one of those people. He doesn't want to talk about what happened, but it seems he joined the Shadows after they helped free him – in a rebellion they supported.

Lorelei wears a small wood carving of Denerim's Vendahl (People's Tree). This is one thing that he kept from there. Slaves took everything else.

It's satisfying that Lorelei survives her ordeal with the slavers, but if Rook decides to save Treviso instead of Minrathus during Act 1's big choice, she could unfortunately still perish. Antivan Crow's Fletcher will be destroyed instead if decided otherwise.
