In a stark and almost unheard of twist of things, a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 — yes, a remake — is reportedly in development, even as the previously announced remake of the first Knights of the Old Republic continues to experience development issues.
Word of its existence comes via Stephen Totillo and his Game File newsletter, where he reported that as recently as March the fine folks at Disney and Lucasfilm Games were planning to remake the beloved sequel.
I made this a great thread, but let's not kid ourselves. The part people are buzzing about the most is that Disney/Lucasfilm Games, as recently as March, is planning a full KOTOR II remake, yes, that's 2, no, not a port…. a full remake. With obsidian cut material – Stephen Totilo (@stephentotilo.bsky.social) 2025-12-08T20:53:14.941Z
What's more, remember that cut material that wasn't in the original version? Yes, it will make it to this version.
Does anyone really believe that a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake still exists?
I have a bad feeling about this.
Wait, how did we get here in the first place?
In his latest edition, Totilo explores how the cut content that was originally supposed to be part of the KOTOR 2 port on the Switch was killed, and the circumstances surrounding a lawsuit filed by someone over “false advertising” that was supposed to be novel but ultimately turned out to be an extremely valuable step in figuring out what the future holds for KOTOR.
While reviewing the statements, Totillo noticed that there were several references to the project titled “Juliet” which was not the code name of the already released KOTOR 2 port. For reference, that port went under “Capulet”.
It was a remake of KOTOR 2 which, according to Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly, “was a project where we were going to do a complete remake of KOTOR II with modern art, modern gameplay, you know, story and characters and keep the normal – normal content of KOTOR II, but remake it for modern hardware and modern graphic things of all those machines.”
This is what we were discussing with Aspyr.
Where it gets interesting is when Reilly was asked if the cut material would be part of the remake, to which he noted that, as long as it's Star Wars-related, it will appear.
In particular, Reilly was asked by a lawyer if there was a planet in the cut material, would it appear in the remake?
“That's the idea,” Reilly said.
It is important to note that it was in existence as early as March. We are now in December, and Totillo added that he could not confirm its status.
Still, this is a rather exciting development if true. One has to wonder though what this means for the Kotter 1 remake, which is already in development and arguably in serious trouble, and how much its up-in-the-air status will hinder things moving forward. At least, it looks like there were or are plans to make a definitive copy of KOTOR 2 and that should be enough to get fans going.
