A third Golden Age for Overwatch's Mercy Men may soon be upon us

As a flex player with nearly 500 hours at Mercy – most of my time in a support role – I have seen Overwatch Nayak has been going through many peaks and valleys since 2016. She had to choose one. OverwatchDue to his ability to resurrect an entire team with his Ultimate in the early days, even unskilled Mercy players are able to find value by hiding in the corner and waiting for the rest of the team to wipe out. Obviously, a hero goes against what is practically mandatory Overwatch's design philosophy, so Team Rage was dropped in favor of Valkyrie Ultimate and Single Target Rage, which has been common for over eight years. That was the end of Mercy's first golden age, but it wasn't her last.

While Battle Mercy, pockets with a skilled DPS duo, and talented movement users have managed to make Mercy work since the end of this era, she wasn't really OP again. OverwatchStadium mode. Here, he glowed due to the Crepuscular Circle ability for the first several weeks of Mode's life. When deemed broken, just like his old ultimate, Mercy Menes blasted with this special power. With it equipped, they can use their pistol and heal at the same time while on Valkyrie. When paired with Valkyrie's five seconds from the resurrection provided by Renaissance, Mercy Men was constantly fighting like they never were, making her an active character instead of a passive one. Unfortunately, after complaints, this ability was removed in Season 18, bringing to an end Mercy's second Golden Age. And while playing her hasn't been fun since then, I'm excited about the potential for another golden age of Mercy, which has a chance to begin when the mid-season update arrives.

OverwatchThe midseason patch for Season 1 does not currently have a release date. However, it is expected either on March 10 NieR collab or March 17 with the conclusion of the Overwatch vs. Talon event.

While the reaction to the top-down gameplay of the upcoming mobile spin-off Overwatch Rush has been mixed, it's probably the best approach.

Why the midseason patch for Overwatch Season 1 is a game-changer for Mercy

The worst case scenario for Mercy is that she gets a small but meaningful boost to her viability with the midseason patch. That's because Blizzard has confirmed that one of the most requested Mercy changes — adding the Flash Heal perk to her base kit — will happen when the Midseason Update arrives. Whenever Mercy's rework is discussed, it's often the first thing players mention as a step worth taking, as Flash Heal is very useful but far from overpowered.

For anyone unfamiliar with what Flash Heal does, it's a simple bit of burst healing from his staff. Activated by pressing the Square button on PlayStation and the equivalent button on other platforms, Flash Heal targets instantly receive a beam of 150 HP, which can be a game changer for squishing targets and helping sustain tanks focused by the opposing team. While it initially used a revival charge, Blizzard realized that it weakened the ability too much, and because of that it was later given an independent charge. While this adjustment makes it a solid Tier 3 perk choice for Mercy, her kit is so simple that making it part of her base ability lineup always seemed like the logical next step, as it would allow their players to do more while helping compete with multi-doable supports like Kiriko.

Fortunately, Blizzard has heard these requests, and while making Flash Heel part of Mercy's base kit doesn't immediately make her stronger again, it opens the door to that possibility for a reason. Because Flash Heal is currently a major perk, making it part of Mercy's base ability pool means she needs a new major perk to replace it. And with that essential addition comes the extremely strong potential for a new Major Perk, which combined with Flash Heel could make Mercy feel her best for a long, long time.

Lifeweaver, another struggling support, is getting a similar midseason buff. His Life Grip will now wipe targets pulled by default, making his signature ability a bit more useful without requiring perks to boost it.

Hopefully, Mercy's next golden age is her longest

While Mursi's reign of terror (which briefly reappeared Overwatch Classic) was memorable, it didn't last long, as the Classic Rage was discontinued 15 months after its launch. His stadium dominance was even shorter, lasting about five months. Whenever kindness feels powerful again, I want to see it change. Don't get me wrong, the old fashioned revivals had to go, fun as they were. And while I think Crepuscular Circle could have been nerfed instead of outright removed, I understand why it was unpopular with non-mercy players. Still, I'd like to see an era where Mercy was much, much better without being broken. Kiriko has essentially been meta since release, so it's frustrating to see what that means Overwatch's most accessible character goes through whiplash periods where she feels incredibly funny/impressive or boring/weak.

As for what Mercy's new Major Perk might be, there are several options, just a few:

  • Flash Damage Boost like Flash Heal, where Mercy can choose a target and hit them with a beam that has damage boosting effects for five seconds, but she doesn't need to keep the beam on the target. This way, she can effectively do two full damage boosts at once, but sporadically, the flash boost will have a decently long cooldown.

  • A buff to the Valkyrie ultimate that heals it's Chained Beam of Mercy and increases damage at the same time, instantly making it an ultimate to fear.

  • One of his stadium powers, like the Triage Unit, which sees players healing low-health targets via Guardian Angel.

Ultimately, whatever it is, the idea that Mercy is getting a potentially huge new major ability with the addition of Flash Hell is exciting to me and certainly to other Mercy mains as well. Of course, it's good that we're getting another Mercy skin with it NieR Collaboration, but cosmetics can only go so far. Making Mercy's core gameplay loop more satisfying is something that's long overdue, and it's finally about to happen. As already stated, the worst case scenario is that the Major Perk gets frustrated and Mercy goes from a C-tier healer to a viable B-tier option due to Flash Heal. And the best case? Mercy's new major perk is strong enough when used in conjunction with Flash Heel that she enters a Golden Age like Team Rage or Crepuscular Circle. In a perfect world, Mercy would finally feel good about playing without suffering to play against, and hopefully, that's what happens when the midseason update arrives.
