After finally redeeming itself in 2025, Overwatch 2 made a huge mistake

It took time Overwatch 2 To redeem itself and justify its existence, but through hard work and constant updates from Aaron Keller and Team 4, the game did just that in 2025. Progression 2.0 and earnable loot boxes are great motivation to keep playing beyond Battle Passes, while core gameplay has been improved through a perk system. Overwatch 2The Lore Codex has recently been added and is a useful tool for lore lovers, while the stadium has taken on new life. Overwatch 2 And really made the franchise feel fresh for the first time in years. With such a hot streak, it's a bit strange Overwatch 2 2025 ended (and 2026 begins) with a controversy.

Said argument is rather simple: Overwatch 2 It's currently hosting a region-specific event focused on Talon in China, and players from all other regions are feeling left out because of it. Of course, there have been other region-specific events for China before, as this version of the game is essentially playing catch-up to the main version. Overwatch Not accessible in China for some years. That doesn't make it any less disappointing, though, especially when considering how many cool cosmetics can be earned in this China-exclusive event. While Overwatch 2While Winter Wonderland had a variety of rewards, it's dwindling now, and being able to earn some skin tones, tier skips, and loot boxes just doesn't compare to getting some great cosmetics for absolutely free.

Overwatch 2's “Black Claw Archive” features quality loot for Chinese players

While this limited-time Chinese event doesn't offer exclusive game modes or lore — two things that really annoy players in other regions — it does offer something rare and most sought after. Overwatch 2 Cosmetics. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Demon Hunter Sombra

  • Luchador Ripper

  • Chained King Ripper

  • Thunder Doomfist

  • Lilith Moira

  • Ninja Sombra

These skins stand out for a variety of reasons. Chained King Ripper, Luchador Ripper, and Thunder Doomfist are rare because they are pre-OWL costumes, with players outside of China permanently losing access to them a year ago. Lilith Moira was part of the expensive Final Battle Pass bundle in the Diablo 4 Collab Season, while Ninja Sombra was a Season 19 Battle Pass exclusive. Demon Hunter Sombra is probably the most surprising unlock here, as it debuted as a Blizzcon skin before being briefly unlocked at Halloween in 2019. Ever since a recolor was released, the original is extremely rare, as players haven't been able to easily obtain it for over 7 years.

These are just a few of the three dozen skins offered at the event, with Redditor Legitimate_Pop5682 detailing how the event will work for curious players outside of China. Rather surprisingly, half of these rare skins can be obtained completely free. Players must play as each “Black Claw” (Talon) hero to complete character-specific challenges, earning a free skin of their choice if they complete them all. Every day they log in, they claim an additional free skin. Not only are Chinese players getting access to the skins other fans desperately want back, but they're getting them for free through this program, which is easy to complete.

If that wasn't enough, playing 50 games in 20 days nets players 20 regular loot boxes, 8 epics, and 3 legendary—comparable to what Krampus Junkrat offers in Winter Wonderland 2025.

Overwatch 2's region-specific events are a slippery slope

While Overwatch 2While region-specific events have so far focused on China, perhaps this will not always be the case. The Overwatch 2 The hero roster is full of characters from around the world, so there's room to spiral and have a UK-exclusive Tracer event, a Japan-only Kiriko event, a D.Va-centric Korea event, and so on. That hopefully won't happen, because that would only make FOMO feel worse, but it certainly doesn't seem impossible. With other regions complaining about not getting these region-specific events, perhaps Blizzard would see the ideal solution as introducing region-specific events for other countries instead of stopping them altogether.

It makes sense to give Chinese players catch-up events that not only provide loot boxes, but also give them access to special cosmetics that players in other regions have lost access to feel too far-fetched – especially when considering that Chinese fans are picking up cosmetics for free. Players would love another chance to buy Thunder Doomfist again, so seeing him offered for free to a certain group of players as a make-up gift (after they've already had other, similar events) is disappointing for some gamers. Hopefully, Blizzard will listen to these complaints, making a version of the Talon event available in other regions soon. It's hard to imagine it being as liberal as the Chinese version, but it still goes a long way to make players feel like they're not missing out, as gamers feel like they're being heavily biased right now.
