Regular Rasengan Jutsu

A technique invented by Minato

The Rasengan is the signature jutsu of the Uzumaki family, and it carries a deep, emotional history. Naruto's father, Minato Namikaze, invented this jutsu so that Naruto's mother, Kushina Uzumaki, could use it on missions. His inspiration was the Tailed Beast Ball, and this technique is supposed to work well with high amounts of chakra. It was Kushina who gave the jutsu its name.

When performing the Rasengan, the user emits chakra from his palm, spinning it in multiple directions, turning the energy into a sphere/ball. Although technically a size conversion, it requires no hand sealing. While the technique itself is simple (it's just a mass of chakra), it's actually quite challenging to master, as spinning the chakra requires great control. Like his father, Boruto relies heavily on this jutsu in the story.

A few variations of the regular Rasengan

Since the Rasengan is useful and versatile, users can create variations of it. A simple way to upgrade this jutsu is by using more chakra, expanding the force. In the anime, Naruto creates Big Ball Rasengan (or Giant Rasengan), a larger and more powerful force, by accident. Later, he built an even bigger force, The Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan (also called Massive Rasengan or Super Giant Rasengan), which he can use with only one hand. Boruto learned these two versions from his father.

Two Rasengan users can also combine powers and form a larger “Cooperative Rasengan”. In the story, we only saw this done by the father and son duo.
